Former Garden City High School standout golfer Taylor Larsen has been named the Kansas Golf Association’s Junior Player-of-the-Year for 2017.
After a May graduation from GCHS, where he helped the Buffaloes to top-five finishes in the Class 6A state championship, Larsen competed in his final season as a junior (ages 18 and under).
During the summer months, Larsen finished second, losing in a sudden death playoff for the title, in the Kansas Junior at Turkey Creek Golf Course in McPherson.
Later, Larsen, a left-hander who now is a freshman at the University of Missouri-Kansas City and playing for the Roos golf team, beat the elite 16-man field in the Kansas Junior Match Play at Mariah Hills Golf Course in Dodge City.
Larsen also captured West Section KJGA events in Dodge City and Hays, and was runner-up in another at Buffalo Dunes Golf Course. At the Junior Section Team Championship, Larsen finished tied for third.
For the qualified events, Larsen compiled 526.99 points to finish ahead of Jacob Lackey, who totaled 447.75 points. Audrain, who won the High Plains Amateur in late August at The Golf Club at Southwind, was third in the player of the year chase with 435 points.
In 2016, Larsen finished runner-up at the Kansas Amateur Championship, played at The Golf Club at Southwind, and also earned Western Athletic Conference player of the year honors during his high school career.
