The Garden City Community College women’s soccer team opened its season Monday at Northeastern Junior College in Sterling, Colo., and was promptly routed, 8-1.
Northeastern scored five goals in the first half and added another in the second half, before the Busters got on the board on Gorettie Mendez’s 61st minute goal. Two more Northeastern goals, including one in the 90th minute, capped the scoring.
“Each and every player out there is giving 100 percent,” head coach Scott Westbrook said of the Lady Busters. “We’ve got a tremendous amount of things to work on, but they played with fight throughout the game.”
The Busters had 12 shots to Northeastern’s 16, but Northeastern had 10 corner kicks to Garden’s one. A pair of Northeastern players recorded hat tricks in Macy Gurvie and Jamie Dillenburg.
