squad falls

ANDOVER — The Newton High School boys’ soccer team fell to Andover Central 2-1 Thursday at Andover District Stadium.

Andover Central scored in the first half on a corner kick and added a goal in the second half.

Newton scored in the second half on a goal by Michael Velasquez with an assist from Brayden Cornejo.

Newton falls to 1-1 and plays Wichita North at 9 a.m. Monday at the Titan Classic at Wichita South.

JUNIOR VARSITY — The Newton High School junior varsity boys’ soccer team tied Andover Central 1-1.

Santiago Fernandez scored on a free kick in the first half. Central scored in the second half.

Newton is 0-0-2 and plays Sept. 14 at Goddard Eisenhower.

Sedgwick sweeps

home triangular

SEDGWICK — The Sedgwick High School volleyball team claimed a pair of wins in triangular Thursday at Sedgwick.

Sedgwick downed Leon Bluestem 23-13, 25-23; and Garden Plain 25-21, 22-25, 25-21. Garden Plain downed Bluestem 25-12, 25-13.

Sedgwick hosts Marion and Hutchinson Trinity at 5 p.m. Tuesday.

Railroaders

WICHITA — The Wichita Wingnuts ended a three-game series against the Cleburne Railroaders with a 7-1 win Thursday in American Association play at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium.

Wichita starter Danny Gutierrez (1-1) lasted five innings, allowing seven hits with a walk and three strikeouts. Tyler Kane went two innings, allowing a hit with a walk. Seth Harvey allowed a hit in the eighth inning. Austin Boyle finished the game, allowing a run on two hits in the ninth.

Wichita scored three runs in the bottom of the third inning. Brennen Salgado hit an RBI triple and scored on an error. Wichita added another run on an error.

Christian Stringer hit an RBI single in the fifth inning.

Brent Clevlen hit an RBI single in the seventh inning, followed by a two-run single for T.J. Mittelstaedt.

Maikol Gonzalez broke the shutout for Cleburne with an RBI single in the top of the ninth.

Stringer went two for four for Wichita. Leo Vargas went two for three.

Gonzalez and Geraldo Valentin each went two for four for Cleburne. Mitch Glasser went two for three.

Alberto Rodriguez (5-7) went five innings for Cleburne, allowing three earned runs on six hits with two walks and six strikeouts. Four other pitchers finished the game.

Wichita is 57-38, while Cleburne falls to 44-52. Wichita finishes the season 9-4 against the Railroaders, which moved to Cleburne from Joplin at the end of last season.

Wichita opens a four-game series with the Salina Stockade (18-78) at 7:05 p.m. today for the final homestand of the regular season.

Wichita is 2 1/2 games behind Winnipeg for the best record in the league. The Wingnuts are tied with Lincoln for the second-best record.
