Sporting events a staple of Beef Empire Days

There will be plenty of sporting events taking place during the two-week Beef Empire Days celebration.

Events will start on June 5 and take place until June 13.

The Hoof it to Health Road Run kicks it off at 7 a.m. June 5. The annual 5K/10K run and two-mile walk will start and end at the Garden City Family YMCA, 1224 Center St. Every participant receives a T-shirt and refreshments with their paid registration. Entry forms and additional information can be directed to the YMCA at 275-1199, or to the Beef Empire Days office.

Qualifying for the horseshoe tournament starts at 9 a.m. June 5 at the horseshoe pits south of the Big Pool in Finnup Park. The tournament starts at 10 a.m. Men and women of all ages are welcome. There is a $10 entry fee, and all money will be returned in prizes. Area businesses have donated prizes.

The Coors Light/Garden City Recreation Youth Benefit softball tournament is scheduled for June 5 and 6 at Charles Peebles Complex and Deane Wiley Park. Each team is guaranteed three games. Games start at noon on June 5 and continue the morning of June 6. Entry information is available at the Garden City Recreation Commission office, 310 N. Sixth St., or by calling 276-1200.

The Feedlot and Sponsors' team roping, barrel racing and riding events start at 10 a.m. June 6 at the Finney County Fairgrounds Grandstand Arena. Area feedyard employees and "townies" will be competing in team roping. Concessions will be available.

Starting at noon on June 6, the YMCA will host its Summer Jam-Fest basketball tournament. The tournament will involve 5-on-5 games on 9-foot goals. Participants must be 6-foot-2 or under to play. Entry deadline is June 1, and the entry fee is $50. Contact YMCA Sports Director Jackie Regan at 275-1199 for additional information.

On June 13, Buffalo Dunes Golf Course will host its annual Beef Empire Days four-person golf tournament. The events starts in the morning as tee times start at 8 a.m. and continue through 2 p.m. Tee time reservations may be made by calling the golf shop at Buffaloes Dunes at 276-1210.

The High Plains Archery Club 3-D tournament will round out the Beef Empire Days sporting events, starting at 10 a.m. June 13. The event will be at the outdoor range on East Mansfield Road. Prizes, a raffle and dinner are included with registration fee. For more information, call Tom Chappel at 271-4938.
