CIMARRON — A win is a win.

That's the way the Cimarron Lady Bluejays looked at their 40-19 semifinal win over Sublette on Friday night. The Bluejays overcame poor first-half shooting to snag the win and advance to today's championship game of the Bluejay Invitational

"We didn't play as well as we've been playing," said Cimarron head coach David Ediger. "Sublette is the best team we've played so far, but (we) didn't play up to our standards."

Cimarron was 6-of-37 from the field in the first half.

"That's too many missed shots and too many giveaways," Ediger said.

The Bluejay offense ignited quickly off a Lindsay Wehkamp steal, a layup and a free throw just 42 seconds into the game. Sublette's Riley Matteson responded on the next possession with a layup and free throw of her own, and Wehkamp was charged with the foul.

Just 25 seconds later, at the 6:33 mark, the 5-9 senior Wehkamp found herself on the bench with a second foul. Sublette freshman Alexis Ornelas converted the foul into a pair of free throws, taking Sublette's only lead of the game at 5-3.

Even with Wehkamp benched for the rest of the quarter, the next five minutes was all about the Lady 'Jays. Senior Avery Burns scored consecutive baskets, including a 3-pointer, and fed a bounce-pass assist to Breanna Bryant in a 7-0 scoring run to end the quarter as Cimarron took a 10-5 advantage.

"(Avery) is our leader and our point guard," Ediger said. "Pretty much everything we do revolves around how she plays. She is smart, athletic and gifted." Cimarron slowly pulled away in the second quarter, leading 18-9 at the half. Avery Burns put on a show in the second half, scoring the first seven points, including a basket off an offensive rebound in transition, a 3-pointer and a pair of free throws.

Wehkamp capped off the run with a basket off a Burns assist as the Bluejays build a 27-9 lead.

"In the second half, we started making shots, which allowed us to set up full-court pressure," Ediger said. "That really bothered Sublette."

Avery Burns led Cimarron with 15 points, and Wehkamp finished with 13.

The Bluejays improved to 3-0. They will face Bucklin at 6:15 p.m. today in the championship game. Sublette meets Meade at 3:30 p.m. in the third-place game.
