CIMARRON — One game into the season and already the Lady Bluejays are looking pretty solid.

Cimarron closed out the opening night of its home tournament, the Cimarron Bluejay Invitational, with an 80-36 win over South Gray to advance to Friday's semifinals.

Cimarron went for the early "put-away-and-cruise-control" strategy, taking a 26-6 first-quarter lead as they took advantage of 14 Lady Rebel turnovers.

About the only downer of the game for the Lady Jays was a rougher second quarter when they committed six fouls, put the Rebels at the line and came away with just a 20-15 scoring advantage.

The second half was more consistent play from Cimarron, with an 18-point final quarter and all the scoring coming from non-starters.

Morgan Ediger led the 'Jays with 19, Kari Blattner had 17 and Ashtynn Burns added 12.

Cimarron started the game with a 7-0 run, and finished the opening quarter with a 19-4 streak to dominate early.

Blattner got 10 of her points in that period, including a pair of threes.

Ediger hit a pair of threes as she got nine of the Jays' first 12 points of the second period, and Cimarron had a 46-21 halftime lead.

They finished the game with an 18-3 streak from reserves, led by Korina and Ana Bailon with six points each.

After hanging 80 points on Class 4A Ulysses in the season opener last Friday, Cimarron coach David Ediger still had some unanswered questions about his team.

Monday's game helped fill in some of those blanks.

"We're trying to do the little things right," he said.

People look at the back-to-back 80 points and think the Jays are clicking just fine, Ediger said, but they have a lot to clean up yet.

Shooting 32 of 66 from the field and 9 of 17 from the line were both marked improvements over Friday's game, he said.

Ediger was able to have his girls run a number of offenses Monday, but they didn't run a lot out of sets as the Jays got a number of steals and fast-break opportunities.

"We haven't had to run much offense yet, so tonight we were trying to work on running it," he said, "but we were just hitting shots. Our girls are trained to shoot the ball well when they're open, so it's hard to stop them and run offense."

Most of Cimarron's field goals come off assists, he added, whether it be on a full-court steal and throwing the ball ahead or kicking it out after penetrating the lane.

They also worked on a variety of defensive looks, especially with most of his team getting some quality minutes on the floor.

"And rebounds tonight, we did a better job blocking out than we did the other night," Ediger added.

Trying to be more precise on the offense and being quicker on defensive position is always something they'll work on, he added.

Nine girls scored and many got quality minutes, and that means reserves can post a threat to opponents, Ediger said.

Cimarron will face the winner of today's Sublette-Wichita County game in the semifinals on Friday. Meade faces Deerfield in the other game today, with the winner taking on Bucklin, 53-32 winners over Satanta on Monday.

Cimarron's boys face Wichita County today in the late game, with the winner taking on Sublette, who beat Bucklin 64-30. Meade boys beat Satanta 53-28 and will face Tuesday's South Gray-Deefield winner on Friday.
