ULYSSES — The only thing that had gone right for Ulysses coach Jason Jones and his Tigers in the first half Tuesday against Scott City was that the triangle-and-two "gimmick" defense was working.

The defense, playing man-to-man on Beaver standouts Ron Baker and Alex Swan limited the sharpshooters to just six points, all by Baker in the first quarter. Despite that, the Tigers found themselves on the short end of a 10-point halftime deficit.

Ulysses kept battling through the second half, and finally caught fire from 3-point range to rally for a 47-42 victory.

"It's a huge mental hurdle for us to jump over," Jones said. "Scott City has had our number in football, basketball, track, wrestling, you name it."

After struggling to a meager 1-of-5 performance behind the arc in the first half, the Tigers came out with their long-range shooting eye. Junior Sergio Perez started with a pair in the first 3:07 of the third quarter that led an 11-2 run to pull Ulysses within one at the 3:12 mark of the quarter. Scott City clung to a narrow 34-29 lead when Baker cashed in his only trey of the night at the buzzer to end the period.

With the triangle defense working well, the Tigers pulled themselves into the lead for good on a 3-pointer by sophomore Branden Langston with 5:36 to play, giving Ulysses a 36-35 lead.

"We've had three guys shooting over 50 percent from behind the line all season, so it's not a big surprise," Jones said.

For three minutes the game was still close with the Tigers hanging on to a 40-39 edge with 2:40 to play. It was the closest it would be.

"I thought if we did a good job on (Swan or Baker) we would have a good chance to be in the game," Jones said.

Both teams will be on the road Friday for Mid-State Activities Association games. Scott City is at Pratt, and Ulysses travels to Hays to face Thomas More Prep-Marian.
