Holcomb's Koehn ties school record in pole vault

There was plenty of gold won by area high schools Tuesday at Memorial Stadium. But it was the performance by Holcomb senior Levi Koehn that brought the loudest ovation throughout the Garden City High School track invitational.

Koehn tied a school record in the pole vault by clearing a personal best mark of 15-feet in the pole vault.
"Last year I got 14-feet, so I've been wanting to stepping it up and reach 15," said Koehn, whose season best was 14-6. "I tried to beat the school record today, but I just couldn't quite get it. But I tied it, so that's a start."
The Holcomb senior, who has signed to vault at Fort Hays State University next year, led the area's dominance of the boys pole vault. Koehn's teammate Brett Robinson finished second, clearing 12-0, while Scott City's Dakota Hayes came in third at 11-6.
Clearing the 15-foot mark was even more special for Koehn, since he did it just 10 miles from home.
"It was great because we had a bunch of cousins here, all my friends were here," Koehn said. "My mom, my dad and all three of my little brothers were also here. So it was just a really great experience."
The pair of top finishes helped Holcomb's boys finish fifth in overall team total with 53. Scott City finished with the top area score — 81 points to place third.
Scott City's Tyler Hess won the 400 with a time of 52.35, while teammates Hayes (53.24) and Brenton Carson (53.45) finished fourth and fifth, respectively. Sam McDaniel of Scott City won the 800 in 2:01.82.
The Scott City boys 400 relay team of Dalton Buehler, A.J. Kough, Jason Williams and Edgar De La Cruz were clipped by the Garden City team of Tanner Parr, Jeremy Ensz, Jonathan Duvall and Steven Fowler. The GCHS team had a time of 44.55, while Scott City finished in 44.59.
Holcomb's Michael Wolf had to battle for a second-place finish in the 3,200 with a time of 10:34.58.
The Ulysses boys finished behind Holcomb with 42 points for sixth. Helping the cause was Derek Bohl, who won the discus with a throw of 139-2.
Each area girls team got at least one individual gold medal.
Scott City's Ivanna Rivera won the javelin with a throw of 99-5, while teammate Justine Woofter took second at 98-2. Ulysses also won a field event thanks to Kaylea Britton, who won the shot put with a toss of 38-8. Britton was also the top area finisher in the discus at 98-8.
Janni Meierhoff got the Lady Tigers a gold in the running events with a first-place time of 12:35.52 in the 3,200. Meierhoff also finished fourth in the 1,600, finishing in 5:57.60.
Holcomb's lone gold medal came on the track when Ashley Baier won the 300 hurdles (48.53).
Holcomb's 400 relay team of Ashley Angeles, Emilee Stegman, Jenna Jarnagin and Heidi Boyles came in second behind Garden City with a time of 54.62.
