Scott City's three-time defending Class 3A state championship team, minus the bulk of its players who accomplished the three-peat, found its season-opening matchup with one of Colorado's top Class 4A schools in Pueblo East just too tough of an assignment.

The result was a 69-51 victory for the visitors on the opening night of the Clarion Inn Southwest Classic at the Scott City gym.

The Eagles jumped on the youthful Beavers, who had four new starters, early in building a 24-15 first quarter lead and then built it to 41-26 at halftime.

"They're good, and they shot the heck out of the ball," said Scott City coach Glenn O'Neil. "They're tough. They have a good mixture of drivers, shooters, and they're experienced with five senior starters."

The third quarter proved to be the undoing for the Beavers as they were outscored 15-8 in that stretch to fall behind 56-33 and could never get the deficit under 15 in the fourth quarter.

Each team connected on six 3-pointers, with Pueblo East's Nick Fesmire and Scott City's Trey O'Neil canning three apiece.

The Eagles (4-1) were led by Jimmy Valdez with 15 points while Tj Gradisar followedwith 14 and Dylan Gavin adding 11. For the Beavers, Trey O'Neil had a game-high 19 points and Brett Meyer contributed 14.

The Beavers (0-1) will play host at 7:45 p.m. today against Wichita Trinity on day two of the Southwest Classic.
