Lady Broncs sweep home quad

LAKIN — It was Senior Recognition Night for three Lakin Lady Broncs volleyball players Tuesday night and the trio led their underclassmen teammates to three victories against Hi-Plains League opponents to cap off the celebration.
In remaining a perfect 7-0 in the HPL, the Lady Broncs (15-9 overall) dispatched of Wichita County (25-17, 25-15), Satanta (25-20, 25-16) and Stanton County (25-17, 25-14).
The three seniors — Tayler Frederiksen, Amy Dunn and Jodie Jennings — contributed in many ways to the sweep, but it was Frederiksen who got to enjoy a role she has not played all season.
A week ago, she asked coach Steve Davidson if she could for at least one game move from her seasonal role as Libero (a defensive specialist and setter) to playing all six positions.
"I really enjoyed it and it was fun to play all the way around," Frederiksen said. "Libero is what I want to play when I go to college, but this was what I wanted to do on my last home match."
The Lady Broncs, who lost this past weekend in the difficult Liberal Invitational to Dodge City and Southwestern Heights, continued to show steady signs of improvement at the halfway point of the schedule.
"We're just getting a better feel for everyone and where they are on the floor," Frederiksen said. "We've had a freshman come in and play quite a bit and our defense and passing is a lot better than it was but we still need to work on our coverage. We just want to keep getting better."
For Davidson, he was pleased to see his team play more relaxed, especially in the final game against Stanton County, which defeated Wichita County (27-29, 25-15, 25-19) and Satanta (25-19, 25-23) to finish 2-1 on the night. Satanta outlasted Wichita County in three sets to conclude play (25-22, 22-25, 25-19).
"I thought we played more loose and played well, especially the last game," Davidson said. "Mixing the lineup was interesting and it seemed to work well. It gives us something else we can maybe do depending upon the opponent and circumstances. We're at the point in the season, though, where we need to get it rolling and keep our confidence high."
