SATANTA — When Mike Heater took over the girls basketball coaching duties at Satanta in 2006, he inherited a program that had little winning experience.

Now, heading into the final weeks of his fourth season, the Lady Indians have grown up. And they are winning.

Monday in a game rescheduled from Jan. 29, Satanta rolled to its seventh consecutive victory, blitzing Syracuse 61-39 in a Hi-Plains League contest.

"It's the maturity and defensive intensity that are the big differences for us," Heater said. "We're able to step it up and force turnovers and get us out into the open floor for some easy buckets."

Junior guard Kelsey Blair led the Indians, torching Syracuse (9-7, 4-3) for 25 points, coming on 8-of-9 two-point field goals, a pair of treys and 3-of-3 free throws. Her junior frontcourt teammate, Aubree Young, popped in 18 points and grabbed a game-high eight rebounds as Satanta outrebounded Syracuse, 38-24.

Heater was concerned whether his team would be ready for the game, played on a day when school was not in session.

"We finally got them out of bed and had a shoot-around at noon," Heater said. "We got a good effort from everyone and our seniors did a lot of the little things to help us out."

For more than two quarters the game was close, but then the Lady Indians went on a 10-0 run to close out the third quarter and finish the period.

It was also Senior Night for the Indians and two Satanta girls — guard Keyla Thacker and forward Shelby Connor — were able to celebrate their first victory over Syracuse.

"We certainly wanted to win and I was very excited, but just tried to concentrate on the game," Thacker said. "I haven't been shooting the ball well lately and it was nice to hit some early."

Thacker scored the first five points for Satanta with a two and 3 -pointer and finished with nine points. One of her two treys came midway through the third that started the 10-0 burst for her team. Connor helped the rebounding domination with seven boards.

"It's the first winning season I've been a part of here," Thacker said. "We are playing good defense, boxing out and when our shots are falling, we tend to get things going."

Syracuse made two brief runs at the Indians to start the fourth quarter, as seniors Kylee Hedberg and Kamie Rash knocked down a deuce and a trey to trim the lead 39-33 at the 7:24 mark. But junior Stephanie Caro nailed a 3-pointer of her own at the 6:58 mark to put Satanta back up by nine.

While Satanta forced Syracuse into 19 turnovers, the Indians just turned it over 11 times.

Hedberg paced Syracuse with 21 points and Rash followed with 14.
