SUBLETTE — Starting the season 5-1 is a great feeling, especially heading into the holiday break.

Matt Ziegler, coach of the Sublette Larks, is happy for his team, but he knows they still need to get better.

But for now, his team is savoring the moment after defeating Satanta 56-20.

That win comes on the heels of a three-point win over Lakin on Tuesday when they came from 16 down in the third quarter.

This win over the Indians was a bit easier than Tuesday's.

Down 3-1 midway into the first period, the Larks scored 11 straight times over the next nine minutes.

They used a combination of a fullcourt press and pressure defense to create turnovers and force bad shots.

They also blocked four shots in the first quarter alone, led by Joe Lower's three.

Up 32-9 at halftime, the difference could have been more. Sublette missed nine three-pointers in the first two quarters.

Fortunately, the rest of the Larks offense seemed to be working well.

Travis Leverett, who had scored 32 points in Tuesday's win, scored all 12 of his points in the first half, including six straight and four straight to end those two quarters. Taylor Williamson added nine points and seven rebounds.

The second half featured a number of non-regulars getting considerable playing time, led by freshman Cameron Brown, who had nine points in the fourth quarter.

Ziegler said the team was focused on going into the break with no more than one loss. With that accomplished, the next step is to move forward one step at a time. Tonight's game was preparation for that next step.

"We came in tonight wanting to play within ourselves," he said, and for the most part they did. "But we struggled at times, getting out of sync. We played well in spurts, not overall. But we came away with a win, and that's the ultimate goal."

Sublette shot 50 percent in the first half, converting on a number of offensive rebounds.

Leverett not having to score 32 in this game, Ziegler said, was actually good for the team.

"That's the fun thing about this team. Travis had 32 against Lakin. At the same time Alex White can go off (he had seven in this game), or Taylor Williamson (he had 13). Or when Joe Lower gets his shot going, it's scary how good this team could be when we have all our guys going," Ziegler said.

Right now the Larks are using solid defense to keep themselves in games, Ziegler added, and when the offense comes around to clicking as it should, he likes his team's chances looking to January and February.

Williamson's 13 points and Leverett's 12 led the Larks, while Zach Freeman had five to lead Satanta.

Both teams are off until January.
