HOLCOMB — The Holcomb Longhorns have lived on pressure defense and fast-break offense in its recent success on the basketball court.

It was no different Tuesday night as the Longhorns thoroughly outmatched Satanta, 90-18, in a Hi-Plains League contest.

Except for the opening tipoff and an early 2-2 tie, Holcomb was in complete control. And it was over early. The running clock rule was utilized in the fourth quarter.

The Longhorns (4-3, 2-1) scored 22 points en route to a commanding 22-5 first quarter lead and then extended it to 48-9 by halftime.

"In a game like this you just try to work on being solid in what you want to do," Holcomb coach Scott Stegman said. "We just need to take care of the ball better and I thought we did a much better job of that tonight."

Thirteen players saw action for Holcomb and nobody played more than 18 minutes as 11 scored. Jacob VanCampen and Mitchell Gaede paced the Longhorns with 17 points apiece. Logan Singhisen chipped in 11. Michael Young's five points topped Satanta's effort.

"We have to continue to improve and every game we seem to get a little better," Stegman said. "They are understanding what varsity ball is all about and we want to make sure the improvement continues so we will be playing our best from now until at the end."

Stegman said he was pleased overall with his team's defensive effort which forced 41 turnovers. The Longhorns owned a commanding 58-22 rebounding advantage with VanCampen leading the way with nine.

"Good things happen when you get rebounds and can get out in transition," Stegman said. "Jacob's been doing that all the time. He's always around the boards and that creates a lot of scoring opportunities for him.

"We're certainly not where we need to be but we are much better than where we were in December."

Holcomb will be at home on Friday night for another HPL game against Stanton County. Satanta (1-7, 0-3) is idle until next week's Hi-Plains League tournament which starts Monday in Elkhart. Pairings for the tournament will be announced today.
