Gottschalk powers Holcomb past Satanta

Published 1/13/2010

HOLCOMB — Junior Breanna Gottschalk has been Holcomb's go-to player during it surge to a 6-1 record.

Tuesday night was no different as the 5-foot-10 forward poured in a game-high 23 points and grabbed a season-high 19 rebounds to pace the Lady Longhorns to a 67-57 victory over a scrappy Satanta team in a Hi-Plains League contest.

"She's been there for us all season, but we finally did get some others involved in our offense," Holcomb coach Kelley Snodgrass said. "For us to do well down the stretch, we need to be playing team ball."

Two other juniors joined Gottschalk in double figures — Mallory Komlofske and Amy Stegman — with 10 points apiece.

"We did some good things at times, and at other times we still are having the same problems," Snodgrass said, referring to the 32 turnovers Holcomb committed. "We tend to get in a hurry and not see the floor where our teammates are."

The victory was hard fought over the Indians. Relying on a strong contingent of 3-point shooters, Satanta was limited to just 4-of-20 behind the arc by the aggressive Holcomb defense.

"We've got to learn how to play 32 minutes," Satanta coach Mike Heater said. "We basically conceded the first three minutes of the game to them and in the third quarter our conditioning showed and we quit moving our feet on defense."

Satanta (5-4, 1-2) held slim leads of 15-14 and 31-30 after the first two quarters before a 10-2 run to close out the third quarter left the Longhorns with a 45-38 lead.

Shelby Connor hit a bucket less than 30 seconds into the fourth period to cut the Holcomb lead to five, but the the Longhorns went on a 14-0 run to go up 59-40, with 4:33 remaining.

Satanta though, refused to roll over. The Indians scored the next nine points in just over two-in-a-half minutes and it was 59-50 with just 1:57 remaining.

"I'm proud of the way the girls hung in there at the end," Heater said. "We were able to work on a lot of situations that will help us down the road. We slowed the game down, got to the line and they responded to the coaching and kept fighting."

Heater, though, was disappointed in his team's effort in the rebounding. Holcomb outrebounded Satanta 65-32

"We talk about it all the time, but we didn't do a good job tonight," Heater said. "(Holcomb) is just more aggressive in that area."

Satanta's offense was paced by Kelsey Blair's 17 points and Connor finished with 12.

Holcomb is back in action on Friday at home against Stanton County in Hi-Plains League action. Satanta is idle until next week's Hi-Plains League tournament which tips off on Monday at Elkhart.
