CIMARRON — There will be one familiar team and one newcomer when the Cimarron Bluejay Invitational girls championship game tips off Saturday night.

But for the first time in Cimarron coach David Ediger's five seasons, the Lady Bluejays will not be battling for the title.

Satanta's upstart Lady Indians pulled off the biggest surprise of the girls tournament, thus far, with a come-from-behind 41-38 victory Thursday night.

Next up for coach Mike Heater's squad will be defending champion South Gray, as the Lady Rebels dispatched of Dighton 71-45 to easily advance to their third straight title game. They lost to Cimarron two seasons ago but came back and defeated the Lady Bluejays in the 2008 championship contest.

"It was a hard-fought game, and I thought our conditioning in the fourth quarter made a lot of difference," said Heater, who is now in his fourth season at Satanta. "We've talked about showing heart and guts and the girls did just that tonight."

At the 5:02 mark of the fourth period, Heater saw his team down by six, 36-30, following consecutive Cimarron baskets by Avery Burns and Kate Lock. From that point on, though, Satanta finished off the game with an 11-2 run including nine straight before Janae Helfrich stopped the rally with a follow-up shot at the 1:05 mark to make it a 39-38 game.

With both teams turning the ball over in the last minute, it was left to a final bucket with 5.9 seconds showing by Stephanie Caro, who took an overhead pass from Aubree Young on a mid-court inbounds pass play and drove in for the clinching points. She was fouled, missed the free throw, and Cimarron could not get off a final shot.

"The girls gave a good effort and they played hard," Ediger said. "But we just have to play hard, and smart. (Satanta) anticipated our passes, we made soft and lazy passes and we didn't learn as the game went on. We needed to penetrate and then pass off. And it was everyone — from sophomores to seniors — we didn't pass the ball very well."

South Gray's girls have now gone 57-2 over the past two seasons and three games of this year. A state title two years ago and a runner-up Class 1A finish a year ago sit in the closet and this year's South Gray team is looking for a trip back to Hays.

For now, though, Saturday is the main focus for new head coach Andy Gillen.
