Stanton Co. sweeps Moscow, Syracuse boys survive at Showcase

Stanton County's boys and girls basketball teams opened the Rolla Showcase with victories over their respective counterparts from Moscow on Thursday.

The Trojan boys won 58-48 while the Lady Trojans rolled to a 53-21 triumph.

They were scheduled for semifinal games today with the boys playing at 5 p.m. and the girls at 3:30 p.m.

In the girls game, the Lady Trojans were leading 20-14 at halftime after having an 18-10 first quarter advantage. They then used a 26-2 third quarter to blow open the game.

Lea Daniels led the Lady Trojans with 18 points, including three 3-pointers. Gylee Martin also scored in double figures with 15 points. Stanton County was 15-of-22 from the free throw line. Moscow was 5-of-8 from the line. Kendra Haines led Moscow with six points.

Leighton Grover and Seth Holliday combined for seven 3-point baskets to pace the Trojans in the boys triumph. It was their second victory of the season after opening with a 53-51 win on Saturday at Walsh, Colo.

The game was tied at 8-all after one quarter but an 18-6 Trojan outburst in the second quarter provided a 26-14 halftime advantage. The Trojans then had a 20-15 edge in the third quarter to take a 46-29 lead into the final quarter.

Grover finished with 20 points, Holliday added 15 and Johnathan Carrasco chipped in with 13. Moscow received 14 points from Raymundo Garcia and 11 each from Breck Roop and Alfredo Cantu.

Syracuse boys 60, So. Baca, Colo. 55

The Syracuse Bulldogs boys held off South Baca, Colo., 60-55, to capture its tournament opener of the Showcase.

The Bulldogs (2-0) led 17-10 and 33-30 in the opening half and had a 48-44 lead after three periods.

J.D. Howell scored 19 points to pace the Bulldog attack. Gary Parks and James Burkett added 10 apiece.

Elkhart girls 73, Syracuse 47

The Elkhart Lady Wildcats jumped out to a 19-12 first quarter lead and were never threatened.

Payton Fleming scored 15 points to pace Elkhart while Darian Cashler scored 14 points to pace Syracuse and Albani Dowell added 10.

Syracuse (47) — Dowell 4 2-2 10, Perez 0 2-4 2, Cashler 6 2-4 14, Helton 3 0-2 7, Licon 2 1-2 5, Gerard 4 1-3 9. Totals 19 8-17 47.
