Not only are there big questions as to which team and individuals will challenge for the respective Class 6A and 3-2-1A state girls golf tournament titles on Monday when teams from across Kansas land at Buffal Dunes Golf Course and The Golf Club at Southwind, but what will Mother Nature throw at the two fields comprised of approximately 92 players.

Those questions will be answered soon enough, but will the week later dates for this year's state tournaments have any adverse effect on the teams and individuals that will battle it out on Garden City's two outstanding golf courses?

In Class 6A, defending team champion Shawnee Mission East earned a return trip to defend its crown by winning the Heritage Park Golf Course regional on Monday in Olathe. The team's 365 total wasn't an eye-opener, which was reserved for Topeka-Washburn Rural's 322 at Wichita's L.W. Clapp Golf Course.

Other regional team champions included Olathe Northwest at Overland Park Golf Course with a 361 total and Maize High with a 340 at Hutchinson's Carey Park Golf Course.

Garden City's Lady Buffs, powered by medalist Abbi Shaddix (72), placed second to earn sixth consecutive trip to the state tournament on their home course. The Lady Buffs were five shots back of Maize at 345, which was their lowest team total for the season.

Also returning to defend her individual title is Olathe Northwest's Audrey Judd, who posted a 74 at Overland Park Golf Course to win that regional by three shots over Bailey Gibson of Olathe South. Haley Florey of Washburn Rural was the medalist at L.W. Clapp with a 75 while Kylie McCarthy of Manhattan was right behind with a 76 and Talisa Hughes third with a 78. Shaddix won her regional by six shots over Taelyn Entriken of Maize. Alex Larson of Blue Valley West shot an 87 to claim medalist honors at the difficult Heritage Park regional.

For the Class 3-2-1A state at The Golf Club at Southwind, regional winners on Monday included Hoisington (411) at Lake Barton Golf Course in Great Bend; Caney Valley (397) at Woodlawn Hills Golf Course in Fort Scott; Silver Lake (412) at Lake Shawnee Golf Course in Topeka; and Cimarron (420) at Tamarisk Golf Course in Syracuse.

Also qualifying teams at Syracuse were Lakin (436) and Holcomb (463).

Regional qualifying medalists included Hannah Wilborn of Hoisington (93) at Lake Barton, Desiree Nelson of Caney Valley (96) at Woodlawn Hill, Morgan Athon of Silver Lake (86) at Lake Shawnee, and Jessica Ast of Cimarron (93) at Tamarisk Golf Course in Syracuse.

Other area qualifiers in addition to the three teams at Syracuse, included Kiah Rash and Laura Geven of Syracuse. The tournaments are slated to tee off at approximately 9 a.m. at each site and will be an 18-hole, one-day only event.
