Hugoton exacts revenge, sweeps Lakin

Published 5/5/2014

HUGOTON — Lakin was riding a 10-game winning streak heading into Monday's twin bill at Hugoton.

Hugoton, though, was 9-0 and no strangers to the Broncs, who handed the Eagles their lone regular-season loss last year.

It was revenge time for the senior-laden Eagles, as they swept the Broncs 11-4 and 13-1, pounding out 21 hits in the doubleheader.

Hugoton used its stock of bats and arms to corral the Broncs in both games.

Strong pitching (18 combined strikeouts in two games) and Reid Davis' three home runs — including a grand slam — were more than enough for the sweep.

The Eagles sent 12 batters to the plate in an eight-run second inning in Game Two. One of those was Davis, who had already parked a homer to left field in the first inning to score two.

When that inning cleared, Hugoton held an 10-2 lead.

Yates Sutton pitched the first three innings, yielding just one hit and striking out six.

The Eagles scored two more on Davis' double in the next inning, and reliever Dakota Moodie struck out the final batter with the bases loaded to finish the sweep.

Game 1 boded well for the Broncs.

Lakin struck first, scoring three times when they put their first six runners on base. However, they left three on base to let Hugoton off the hook early.

And that was almost all the offense the Eagles would allow, besides a fielder's choice RBI off the bat of Caleb Seeger with the bases loaded in the fourth.

Hugoton, the sixth-ranked team in Class 4A-II, scored four times in the third and three more times in the third, taking a 9-4 lead into the sixth when Davis launched a two-run homer over centerfield to ice the win in the 90-degree setting.

He also had a triple earlier, while Slade Shuck and Maverick Mills each added a double in the Hugoton attack.

Hugoton starter Ross Davis struck out six and gave up four hits before giving way to Nic Frederick in the fourth. He struck out four in four innings and scattered six hits.

It was a good performance for Hugoton (11-0) as they head into tight league play, coach Rusty Crites said.

"What I told these kids after this doubleheader is, once we got those first 25 pitches out of the way, we rolled," he said. "The pitching came together, the defense was pretty good after that and we couldn't ask for a better outing from one through nine both games. We really put bat on ball against Lakin."

Hitting was key Monday, Crites said, and one thing he tells is players is that hitting is contagious.

No better case to look than in game two, in which every hitter got at least one hit.

"Fortunately for us tonight, we had several innings tonight where we could put something crooked on the board and it all came together," he said.

Reid Davis' performance Monday is typical, Crites said of the senior who now has five home runs this season.

"He's really a threat to hit the ball hard off the wall or over the wall," he said. "He's been a complete player and worked on his overall game to prove that."

Ross Davis and Sutton settled into their starting roles, but Crites said he held them to a pitch count because of the three upcoming league matchups.

"Colby comes down on Thursday," Crites said. "Colby's that matchup. We need to take two from them."

For Lakin coach Steve Davidson, it was just two games against a very good team. He just wished they could have struck harder with the bases loaded and nobody out.

"We had some chances early to score a few more runs in that first game. We just didn't get a big hit when we needed to," he said.

A bigger first inning off a good pitcher might have changed things, he added.

Tuesday Lakin travels to league foe Elkhart, and it's a chance for them to regroup and move on, Davidson said.
