Holcomb, Lakin girls eliminated in 3A softball
By GRANT MELIN
HOLCOMB — For the Holcomb girls softball team, its hitting and fielding magic from Monday did not carry over against the Goodland Cowgirls as Holcomb managed only four hits and committed three errors with Goodland capitalizing on those mistakes to defeat Holcomb, 10-0, in a Class 3A regional softball semifinal on Tuesday at Sonnie Baird Park.
Holcomb had a chance early to get on the board in the first inning as Marissa Wilkerson hit into a fielder's choice to shortstop, resulting in Katie Pfeifer being thrown out at home plate. Pfeifer had walked and then went to second and third on consecutive passed balls.
It was hitting frustration from there for the Lady Longhorns as several groundouts and popups took their toll on Holcomb's batters before Wilkerson again tried to pace Holcomb in the sixth inning. She doubled but was doubled up when Taylor Deniston lined out to first base and then was thrown out when she was caught off second.
Like their hitting, the Lady Longhorn's fielding was not much better as Goodland took hold early in the first inning when the Cowgirls capitalized on Hayley Walck's error at first base to socre the first two runs of the game.
For the middle part of the game, Holcomb held its ground, including stopping Goodland's Tasha Gaydusek at home plate in the second inning. The fifth and sixth innings were a different story as Goodland scored five runs in the fifth inning on a fielders choice with the bases loaded, and then took advantage of an Abril Santoyo error to help score the other two runs.
In the sixth inning, another Santoyo error with the bases loaded allowed Goodland's Maddie Mayer to drive in three more runs to run-rule Holcomb and end the game in six innings.
For Holcomb coach Jennifer Barrett, Goodland played like a No. 1 seed.
"Goodland's a very solid team," said Barrett. "They hit the ball well, and their pitcher, obviously, she is quite a bit faster."
However, the motivation for Holcomb was not lost on Barrett.
"We wanted to be aggressive on the base paths from the start, and try and score first," said Barrett. Speaking of Goodland's pitching, "that's quite a change from yesterday, so, the girls did a nice job," Barrett said.
The Holcomb Lady Longhorn's season ends with a record of 12-10.
Despite the loss, few people would disagree with Goodland's seeding.
"You don't get to be 17-3 and not be a solid team," said Barrett.
Russell 10, Lakin 0
Also in Holcomb, Russell scored five runs each in the second and fourth innings and bolted down their defense to pace the Lady Broncos to a 10-0 win over Lakin in the other regional semifinal game on Tuesday.
Karlee Davidson took the loss for the Lady Broncs as Lakin managed only four hits.
The Lakin Lady Broncs 2012 season ends with a record of 14-8.
Russell and Goodland met in the nightcap for the regional championship with the winner advancing to the state tournament on May 25-26 at Manhattan's Twin Oaks Complex.
