HAYS — There was little consolation for the Ingalls girls basketball team here Saturday when they walked off the floor of Gross Memorial Coliseum.

The Lady Bulldogs had just lost the third place game to Wilson, 48-33, but did bring home medals for their surprising fourth-place finish.

The tournament capped off a late-season run for Ingalls and third-year coach Roger Thurlow in which they finished 15-11.

"They made shots from everywhere," Ingalls coach Roger Thurlow said. "They took care of the ball."

Wilson sophomore guard Karlie Steinle scored a career-high 27 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for the Dragons, who finish the season at 21-5.

"You know, she's been so consistent," Wilson coach Rod Seehafer said. "She puts up 20, 20, 20. There's some games where she could've scored 30 or 40, but she's such a team player."

Steinle was just two free throws short of tying Jackie Stiles' record for the 1A state tourney record.

Steinle made 26 free throws in three games at the tournament.

Wilson began to pull away from Ingalls with a minute left in the third period, when Steinle scored two baskets on offensive rebounds, then opened the fourth period in the same fashion, with two baskets on offensive rebounds.

The teams had battled to an 11-11 standoff through the first quarter before a 15-6 run in the second quarter produced a 26-17 halftime advantage for the Lady Dragons. Ingalls couldn't recover from that deficit.

Ingalls (15-11) got 12 points from sophomore Tara Whipple.

Freshman Rebecca Wyatt scored nine points and had seven rebounds for the Lady Bulldogs.

The Lady Bulldogs finished the game hitting just 13-of-40 field goals (32.5 percent) and were 7-of-17 at the free throw line (41.2 percent).

Wilson, meanwhile, hit 14-of-38 field goals (36.8 percent) and were 20-of-26 at the free throw line (76.9 percent).

Both teams had problems with turnovers, the Lady Bulldogs committing 23 miscues and Wilson handing it over 24 times.

Janae Droste did not make things easy for Wilson as she had five of the Lady Bulldogs' 12 steals.

Notes: Ingalls loses just two seniors from this year's squad — Kiley Schmidt and Elizabeth Wendel.

Three other starters will return — Whipple, Rebecca Wyatt and Janae Droste.
