HOLCOMB — Following last week's cardiac-inducing win against conference rival Colby, the Holcomb Lady Longhorns were looking to see if their hearts were back to beating normally.

They got a clean bill of health, as they upped their record to 8-0 and 3-0 in conference play with a 62-31 win over Scott City on Tuesday in Great West Activities Conference action.

The Longhorns got back to their prescription game — dominate the opening minutes, create turnovers and score a lot — to show why they are the No. 2 team in state 3A.

Holcomb put up 19 shots in the opening quarter, draining seven of them, and a pesky defense caused 14 Lady Beaver turnovers, as Holcomb took a 20-3 lead after one period, with the Beavers' lone field goal a three-pointer by Shanaya Hoeme on their third possession.

More of the same in the second period, as Holcomb hit eight of its first nine shots on its way to a 45-13 halftime lead as they cruised to the win.

Once again Holcomb used balanced scoring. Karissa Pena and Kylee Amos led with 14 points each, and Haley Heydman added 12.

Holcomb hit 8-for-27 from 3-point land, including four for Amos.

The Holcomb defense scored 19 of its first-half points off turnovers, a formula coach Kenton Tennal has been using using successfully all season.

Still, he sees room for improvement, especially in putting away shots.

"We started out well. I told them to go out and take care of business," Tennal said. "But we missed so many layups. We have to take care of that as we get ready for Ulysses and the tournament next week."

After a conference game at Ulysses on Friday, Holcomb will travel to Hillsboro for a tournament, which currently features five undefeated teams.

Scott City's leading scorer was Janessa Lowenthal with 10, all in the third quarter. Kelly Wycoff added eight and Hoeme seven, as only four Lady Beavers scored.

The Beavers committed 30 turnovers.

Scott City (1-5, 1-2 GWAC) hosts Colby in a conference game Friday and play in the Orange and Black Classic at Colby next week.
