The Holcomb girls basketball team rebounded from its first loss of the season quite nicely with a 57-9 demolition of TMP-Marian on Thursday in the consolation bracket of the Hillsboro Trojan Classic.

The No. 2-ranked team in Class 3A, the Lady Longhorns focused on themselves, and head coach Kenton Tennal didn't even know exactly how lopsided the game was until it was over.

"I didn't even realize they didn't (only scored nine points), I looked at the scoreboard at the end of the game, and saw that they were still in the single digits," Tennal said. "I didn't really notice. I was just focused on what we were doing."

Four Longhorns scored in double figures, led by Haley Heydman's 14. Karissa Pena added 12, while Katie Pfeifer and Taylor Deniston had 11 each.

Tennal added that Kyshia Prieto did a good job spreading the ball around, and finished with five assists. Pfiefer led the team with eight.

Even though the halftime score was 25-5, Tennal wasn't happy with the effort in the first two quarters. Holcomb responded with a 23-2 third quarter.

"What I was most happy with tonight was the way we responded in the third quarter after halftime," Tennal said. "That's the first time I've gone in this year, with this team, gone into halftime and been real disappointed in the team, and their lack of effort. We had a lot of balls that hit the ground, they were getting all the loose balls, (we) weren't getting any loose balls."

Defensively, TMP was held to 4-of-34 shooting and went 1-of-5 at the free throw line. Tennal was most pleased with the Longhorns' eight team fouls, and that Deniston (no fouls) and Prieto (one) stayed out of foul trouble, especially.

TMP had three points in the first quarter, then two in each of the final three. Playing foul-free defense will be important for the team, Tennal said.

"Defensively, we found out we can actually play defense without fouling," Tennal said. "I told them, we've got to be able to play defense without fouling, or we're not going to be able to accomplish what we want to do. And I told them, first personal foul in the game's going to be coming out. Their thing was that we can't play good defense. Well they found out tonight, when they play defense without fouling, they actually play better defense."
