After Friday night's win against Colby, Holcomb coach Chad Novack was pleased with Dalton Gottschalk's nine points and nine assists.

But he insisted that his 6-3 junior forward was giving up too many shots to give teammates a chance to score.

He talked to Gottschalk about being a bit more selfish in a good way and taking a few more shots against Garden City on Saturday.

Gottschalk took the advice to heart, scoring 14 of his game-high 18 points in the opening quarter to propel the Longhorns to a 26-12 lead en route to a convincing 66-55 victory.

"I had open shots and hit them," Gottschalk said. "I got a couple steals on the break. I just let the game come to me."

It sounds simple, but it probably helped that he is usually the team's fourth leading scorer behind Heath Tucker, Trey Sleep and, more recently, Conner VanCleave.

That Gottschalk picked Saturday night's ArkRiver Rivalry to have a break-out game took a lot of people by surprise.

"They (Garden City) probably didn't see that coming," Gottschalk said. "I just worked and took what they gave me."

Gottschalk opened the game with a 3-pointer and ended the quarter with two steals and breakaway layups.

He finished the game 7 for 10 from the floor, 3 of 4 from the line, and 10 rebounds for a double-double.

"Sometimes I usually pass it to Trey too much even when I have wide-open shots," Gottschalk said. "Sometimes I should take it myself and tonight I did."

On a night where Tucker just made double figures with 10 points off 4 of 11 field goals, Gottschalk's 17-point, 10-rebound performance was his first double-double of the season. He had averaged just under seven points a game in his previous four outings after scoring a season-high 19 against Hillsboro in the semifinals of the Trojan Classic in late January.
