Wichita County teams sweep Healy in opening games

Seniors Trae Bremer scored 32 points and Hannah Mehl 25 points, respectively, to pace the Wichita County boys and girls basketball teams to 60-45 and 65-23 victories Friday night in the season-opening games for the teams.

Bremer, a 6-9 senior center who recently signed a national letter-of-intent to attend division I Campbell University in North Carolina, had 13 field goals, including a 3-pointer, and hit 5-of-7 free throws. Mehl, a 5-8 forward, had 10 field goals, including one 3-pointer, and was 4-of-5 at the charity stripe. Mehl also had seven assists, four steals and nine rebounds.

The Wichita County boys led 15-13, 31-22 and 45-33 at the quarter stops over the Eagles, who were led by Kylan Bennett with 16 points and 10 from Darrick York. Alec Horton added 11 points for the Indians.

Mehl was the lone double-figure scorer for the Lady Indians.

Cimarron girls 61, Ulysses 31

At Ulysses, the Cimarron Lady Bluejays rolled to a 61-31 victory over Ulysses in a non-league season opener for both teams.

The Bluejays owned an 18-4 first quarter lead and extended it to 36-16 at halftime. It was 50-17 after three periods.

Junior guard Avery Burns paced the Lady Bluejays with 22 points while Lindsay Wehkamp and Kate Lock added 17 and 12, respectively. Kaylea Britton and Gaby Chavez had seven points apiece for the Lady Tigers.

Goodland girls 49, Scott City 29

At Scott City, Ashley Archer and Jade Herl combined for 36 points to lead the Goodland Cowgirls to a 49-29 Great West Activities Conference victory over the host Lady Beavers Friday night.

Goodland led at the quarter breaks by scores of 10-8, 20-14 and 28-16 before finishing the night on a 21-13 run in the final eight minutes.

Carissa Chelemedos was the lone Scott City player to reach double figures, finishing with 10 points.

Lakin boys 75, SW Heights 64

At Kismet, Lakin's Broncs got 61 points from Colby Hamel, Bryant Miller and Alex Jones to power their way to a 75-64 season-opening victory over the Southwestern Heights Mustangs in Hi-Plains League action.

Hamel finished with 27 points and 15 rebounds while Miller had 22 and Jones 12 for the Broncs. Ben Johnsrud paced the Mustangs with 18 points and he was followed by Clayton Chase with 14 and Rogelio Martinez with 13.

Deerfield girls 34, Weskan 21

At Deerfield, the Lady Spartans registered a 34-21 victory over Weskan on Saturday night.

Deerfield led 11-2, 20-8 and 26-14 at the quarter stops.

Bridget Crandall and Mariah Smith had eight points each to lead the Lady Spartans while Kellie Young had 9 points for the Lady Coyotes.
