The Garden City Lady Buffs softball team rebounded from a Monday doubleheader loss to Goddard Eisenhower by sweeping the Dodge City Lady Demons by scores of 8-3 and 20-0 in games played Tuesday at Dodge City.

The doubleheader brooming of Dodge City improved the Lady Buffs to 11-3 overall and 5-1 in the Western Athletic Conference, with just a May 7 home doubleheader with Hays remaining on the WAC schedule.

In the opener, the Lady Buffs broke out on top early, scoring two runs in the first and three in the third before Dodge City finally got on the board with a single tally in the third.

The Lady Buffs increased their lead with two runs in the fourth only to have Dodge score its final two runs in the fifth. Dusti Befort picked up her sixth win of the season against just one loss by going the distance, giving up six hits. She walked two and struck out nine.

Garden City’s offense managed 14 hits as Befort was the big threat, going 4-for-4 and driving in three runs.

In the second game, Kori Thornton came within one batter of a perfect game, but did record a no-hitter in the three-inning blowout.
The Lady Buffs had 18 hits with multiple players getting multiple hits. Mekayla Guerrero continued her recent hot-hitting by driving in four runs off two hits. Kennedy Brunson and Jamie St. Clair had three hits each, with St. Clair knocking in two runs. Befort was 2-for-4 with three RBIs while Shea Nordby and Alyssa Greenlee had two hits and two RBIs each.

Garden plated eight runs in the first and 12 in the second to ice this one away early.

Thornton walked none, struckout just one as she improved her season record to 5-2.

The Lady Buffs will travel to Emporia for the Spartan Classic where they play on at 6 p.m. Friday against Andover Central and face Mill Valley at 10 a.m. on Saturday.

Boys golf

For the first time this season, the Garden City Buffaloes had its four counting golfers all shoot scores in the 80s.

But the 343 total for the Buffs was only good for fifth place in the 10-team field at the Dodge City Invitational, played at Mariah Hills Golf Course on Tuesday.

Austin Swender paced the Buffs with an 81 while Jacob Law followed with an 84. Tucker Schiffelbein was next with an 87 and Tristan Corrales rounded out the counting scores with an 89.

“I’m proud of the guys for getting four in the 80s,” Walker Frey, GCHS coach, said. “It’s not a great team score, but we’re getting better.”

Parker Tanner and Mitch Moore rounded out the team scores with 91s. Dodge City won the team title with a 290 total while the Red Demons’ Zach Norton garnered low honors with a 71.

The Buffs are slated to travel to Wichita on Thursday for the Goddard Invitational at the Tex Consolver Golf Course. However, poor weather is forecast and word on the tournament’s status will not be known until perhaps later today.
