Pairings set for sub-state volleyball; GCHS a 3-seed

Garden City High School's volleyball team, recently crowned as Western Athletic Conference champions for the second straight year, have drawn the No. 3 overall seed for Saturday's Class 6A sub-state tournament, which will be hosted by GCHS at its new gymnasium.
The Lady Buffs, 18-14, will face Wichita North (7-22) at 3 p.m. following the 2 p.m. opening match between No. 2 seed Maize High (26-11) and Wichita South (8-27). Those two match winners will face off for the sub-state title and a trip to Topeka on Oct. 26-27 for the state tournament at the Kansas Expocentre.
In the other four-team sub-state bracket also to be played at GCHS, it will be top-seeded and defending regional champion Wichita Northwest (34-5) taking on Haysville-Campus (7-28) at 2 p.m. In the 3 p.m. scheduled match, it will send Hutchinson (19-19) against Dodge City (15-21).
Volleyball sub-states for all classifications are being contested Saturday across the state.
In other area sub-states, Ulysses will host Class 4A with eight teams competing for the one state qualifying spot. The Lady Tigers are top-seeded while Hugoton is seeded fourth.
Holcomb, Cimarron, Scott City and Lakin will be competing at the Class 3A sub-state in Hoisington with the Lady Longhorns (28-7) drawing the No. 1 seed. Lakin (26-9) is seeded third, Cimarron (26-9) is seeded fourth and Scott City (21-14) is seeded fifth. That tourney begins at 2 p.m.
In Class 2A at Meade, Syracuse, South Gray, Sublette and Stanton County will be vying for the sub-state crown. South Gray (11-23) is the highest seed of area schools, with Stanton County (8-23) sixth, Sublette (6-24) seventh and Syracuse (1-23) eighth. Kiowa County drew the No. 1 seed at 32-4. That tourney begins at 1 p.m. Wichita County (5-24) and seeded sixth, will compete in the Oberlin sub-state where Hill City is top-seeded at 32-4.
Bucklin will be hosting a Class 1A-Division I sub-state with Deerfield (4-27, No. 5) and Satanta (12-29, No. 3) competing. That will begin at 2 p.m. Rolla and Dighton are hosting Class 1A-Division II tournaments.
At Rolla, Ingalls (27-9) drew the top seed, while Moscow (17-16) is seeded third. That meet also starts at 2 p.m. At Dighton, the host Lady Hornets were seeded third (13-19) while Greeley County (5-25) was the fifth seed. Healy (0-30) is the bottom seed.
State tournament sites for the following week are 6A-5A at the Kansas Expocentre in Topeka; Class 4A-3A at the Salina Bicentennial Center; Class 2A at White Auditorium in Emporia; and Class 1A-Divisions I and II at Gross Memorial Coliseum in Hays.
