Local, area high schools begin fall sports practices

On Monday, it will be easy to know that fall is just around the corner.

One week later than normal, high school fall sports practices get under way across Kansas, and the 19 schools in The Telegram readership area will be among them.

With some schools beginning classes on Monday while others don't start until as late as Aug. 30, practices will be varied as to starting times.

Garden City High School football coach Brian Hill, entering his fourth season at the helm, will put the Buffaloes, who were 5-4 last year, through one practice that will go from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Buffalo Stadium.

The Buffs will have nearly three full weeks of practice before the opening game on Sept. 6 at Bixby, Okla.

GCHS boys soccer coach Joaquin Padilla has scheduled a 4 p.m. practice on Monday for his Buffs' squad, coming off one of their best seasons in recent memory. All players must have the required physicals and forms submitted to the school before they can practice, and that procedure is in place for all sports.

New Lady Buffs' volleyball coach Shanda Sanders will have first-day tryouts beginning at 11:30 a.m. at The New Garden.

Other sports beginning fall practices include boys and girls cross country teams, and girls golf and tennis.

Garden City's two golf courses will play host to girls state golf tournaments on Oct. 21. Buffalo Dunes will host Class 6A while The Golf Club at Southwind, with Lakin serving as the host school, will host the Class 3-2-1A girls state.

State girls tennis is set for Oct. 18 and 19 while state volleyball is Nov. 1 and 2. State cross country will be on Nov. 2.

State football championship games are Nov. 30.
