Lady Buffs clinch share of WAC crown with sweep of Hays

HAYS — Garden City sophomore Dusti Befort was thankful when Game 2 was called in the top of the seventh due to an approaching thunderstorm.

She wasn't nervous about the possibility of hail or lightning striking. She just wanted a break to rest her arm.

Befort put together a pretty special day in the Buffaloes' doubleheader sweep of Hays High School (10-8, 4-4 Western Athletic Conference) on Tuesday at Dusty Glassman Ball Park.

The victories clinched Garden City (14-3, 7-1 WAC) a share of the league championship with Great Bend — the Buffaloes' first title since 2010.

"At the beginning of the year, we didn't really know where we were going to be at," said Garden City coach Trina Moquett. "To come here and have the chance to be able to at least be co-champions was huge. The girls came out and did their jobs. It was great to watch them do that."

Garden City won 13-2 and 13-4. Befort threw every inning of both games, compiling 13 in all.

"It's fine," Befort said about her reaction to Game 2 getting called early, "because my arm is a little sore."

Not only that, but she led Garden City at the plate, hitting 7-of-10 with eight RBIs in the doubleheader, and had a career-best two home runs in Game 1.

Befort said she was shocked when she homered the second time.

"I've never done that," Befort said. "I've only hit one (this season), and I didn't expect that either."

Garden City used strong opening innings to go up in each game, scoring two in the top of the first in Game 1 and five in the first in Game 2.

From then on, Garden City dominated the Indians in each game, using a combination of power and small ball to plate run after run.

The Buffaloes hit 14-of-36 in Game 1 and 17-of-37 in Game 2.

"Our offense has been getting a lot of runs," Moquett said. "There were a couple games (this season) that we lacked in that area, but if you can get runs behind you, it makes everything go a lot smoother. It was definitely nice to see the girls hit the ball the way they did today."

Befort (9-1) was masterful in each game, sending blazing fastballs past Indian batters.

Her best game was the first. She allowed two earned runs off six hits and two walks while striking out nine.

In the second game, she struggled more with her control, walking four and hitting two Hays High batters with pitches. However, she still managed to hold the Indians to four runs, all earned, off seven hits while striking out five.

The Buffaloes typically don't pitch Befort for both games in doubleheaders, but with WAC on the line, Moquett thought it was for the best.

"We thought with the lineup the way we needed it, we were going to go with her for two games, and it worked out for us well," she said.

Garden City will return home Friday to face Liberal in a non-league doubleheader. It is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.

The Buffaloes already faced the Redskins once this season and swept them, which counted toward the league standings. This doubleheader will not.

Why did Befort pitch both games? Was Thorton hurt?
