It was another tough day at the Newton Invitational basketball tournament for the Garden City Lady Buffaloes.

The Lady Buffs saw a slender one-point lead after three quarters disappear in a fourth quarter that saw Bishop Carroll outscore them by eight and come away with a 54-46 consolation triumph.

The loss drops the Lady Buffs into today's noon seventh-place game against Goddard, which lost to Andover Central, 56-24, in the other side of the bracket.

In the two semifinal bracket games, it was Bishop Miege, which held off the Buffs on Thursday in the opening round, 48-44, knocking off Newton, 56-41, while Olathe Northwest upset previously unbeaten and No. 1-ranked Wichita Kapaun-Mt. Carmel, 40-37.

For Garden City coach David Upton, Friday's performance left a sour taste in his mouth as the Lady Buffs got off to a strong start but couldn't find a way to finish it off in the second half.

The Lady Buffs led 16-11 at the end of the first quarter, and Upton liked what he saw.

"We got off to a great start," Upton said. "We had a high intensity level and the team looked good."

A slower-paced second quarter, though, would be the beginning of what Upton said was a lack of execution and losing energy.

"Somehow we lost the momentum in the second quarter," said Upton who saw Carroll trim the lead to 25-21 with a 10-9 edge in that eight-minute stretch. "We just got out of sync and never seemed to get it back."

The downslide continued in the third, with Carroll narrowing the Buffs' lead to 33-32 before that fourth quarter meltdown resulted in the eight-point loss.

Another 3-point barrage by a tournament opponent proved costly as well. The Golden Eagles knocked down six treys, three by leading scorer Kayla Demel, whom Upton said was a point of emphasis in the scouting report.

"She's the one we talked about beforehand," Upton said of the 19 points drained by Demel. "I'm not quite sure why that happened, but it did."

Following Demel's 19 points, Carroll got strong support from Shelby Lopez with 13 and Brooklyn Bockover with 11.

Free throws down the stretch also sealed the fate for the Lady Buffs as Carroll knocked down 9-of-14 charity shots in the final period.

Taryn Tempel and Jaymie Bernbeck paced the Buffs with 14 and 12 points, respectively, while Johna McClelland and Jacksenie Tornero tallied eight each.

The Lady Buffs are now 10-3 overall.
