Lady Buffs snag 60-38 win vs. rivals

DODGE CITY — David Upton has seen his Garden City Lady Buffaloes play any number of good basketball games during the 2012-13 season.

And despite a convincing 60-38 victory over Dodge City here on Tuesday night, the GCHS girls coach wouldn't say it was one of the better performances.

"We can get by with this against many of the teams we see," Upton said. "But when we get to the postseason and see either a Maize or Wichita South, we can't make the kind of mistakes we made tonight and expect to win.

"The mistakes we made tonight were the kind you make five games into the season, and not in game 18. We've got to do a better job of taking care of the ball."

The Lady Buffs sprinted out to a 19-10 lead after the first quarter thanks in part to Jaymie Bernbeck's fast start, as she tallied eight of her game-high 17 points in the opening period.

"We played well at times in the first quarter and the early part of the second," Upton said.

With a 13-0 run to start the second quarter, the Lady Buffs took command at 32-10 with just less than 5 minutes to play in the half. Then things unraveled a bit.

Dodge City closed out the half on a 5-0 mini-rally to make it 35-18 at intermission.

That momentum, sparked by a fullcourt trapping press by the Demons, forced Garden into numerous turnovers, and Dodge City slowly pulled itself back within shouting distance.

By the end of the third quarter, the Lady Buffs' lead had dwindled to 43-30, and Upton was none too pleased.

"We just sometimes get a bit lazy with the way we play and not focused on the little things," Upton said. "I did think we kind of regrouped in the fourth quarter and closed out the game on a good note."

The Buffs did indeed finish strongly, going on a 17-9 scoring advantage in the stretch run, as they nearly duplicated the 60-37 victory over Dodge back in December in Garden City.

The Lady Buffs had a solid night shooting, finishing at 55 percent on 22-of-40 shots. They were 14-of-18 at the free throw line (78 percent), while limiting Dodge City to just 32.6 percent field goals (15-of-46) and 5-of-11 from the charity stripe.

In addition to Bernbeck's 17 points, Taryn Tempel contributed 15 and Johna McClelland added 10 to go along with her game-high eight rebounds.

The Lady Buffs improve to 15-3 overall and remain atop the WAC standings at 6-0. They have a 6 p.m. home matchup on Friday with Hays High before closing out their regular season at home against Liberal next week. Dodge City's girls, meanwhile, slip to 5-12 overall and 1-4 in the WAC.
