Buffs golf takes first at Liberal

Published 5/14/2014

While the Garden City High School boys golf team was unable to overtake Hays and Dodge City in the Western Athletic Conference season standings on Tuesday, the Buffaloes did get a measure of redemption by winning the Liberal Invitational at Willow Tree Golf Course.

And with the Buffs' two-shot win over league champ Hays (319 to 321), GCHS freshman Taylor Larsen grabbed both tourney medalist honors with a 73, and also was named the WAC Player of the Year, winning two of the five tournaments in which all five teams competed.

"For a freshman to get player of the year honors, it's a pretty big deal, and I'm proud of him," head coach Walker Frey said of Larsen, "He still hasn't reached his ceiling."

Another freshman, Logan Durst, shot a 78 on Tuesday to claim fourth place in the individual race, and also earned honorable mention all-WAC honors. Senior Austin Swender, despite an 84 on Tuesday, also garnered honorable mention all-league recognition.

"Logan's been wanting to get in the 70s, and he's had a couple of 80s, so it's a great breakthrough for him," Frey said of his other first-year player. "He finally got there today."

Tucker Schiffelbeing joined Swender at 84 to round out the counting scores for the Buffs. Connor Schultz had an 86 and Brendon Hopkins a 93 to round out the team scores.

"We had it in the bag after about 13 holes, and we had a couple of the guys make some mistakes coming in, and it got a lot closer than it actually was," Frey said. "We've gotta get the other guys scoring back in the 70s, and if we do that, then I think we've got a chance to compete for a spot in the state next week."

That would be the Class 6A regional which is scheduled for an 8:30 a.m. start at Wichita's Sim Park Golf Course on Monday.

The top three teams will earn spots in the 6A state tournament, which is slated to be played on May 27 at Topeka Country Club.
