Trojans, Broncs roll in district openers

JOHNSON CITY — It didn't take Stanton County long to get its offense rolling as the Trojans cruised past Satanta 45-6 in the first game of their Class 2-1A district on Friday.

The Trojans scored four times in the first quarter, starting with a 17-yard run by Joey McCleary at the 8:46 mark. Stanton County (3-4, 1-0) added two TD runs of 35 yards by Marcus Logan and Austin Nairn along with a 1-yard McCleary TD run in the first quarter.

Satanta (0-7, 0-1) scored its lone touchdown in the second quarter on an Austin Slater 18-yard run.

Nairn paced the Trojan offense that finished with 384 yards on the ground with 155 on five carries. Logan ran for 88 yards on 10 carries, and McCleary had four carries for 41 yards and two touchdowns. Nairn had two rushing touchdowns and one punt return for a score.

In Cimarron, the Lakin Broncs kicked off their district play with a resounding win over the Bluejays, 53-8.

Dylan Shalberg threw five touchdowns, three to Alex Jones and two to Zach Reed, to lead the Broncs over the Bluejays (1-6, 0-1).

Shalberg finished the night with 218 yards passing on just nine completions. Jones led Lakin with 129 yards rushing and 131 yards receiving.

Lakin (4-3, 1-0) will host Holcomb next week in a battle of district unbeatens.

Elkhart (3-4, 1-0) scored in the first quarter on a 5-yard run, but the point after was no good. Sublette (4-3, 0-1) scored twice in the second quarter on long passes, but both points after were no good.

Elkhart tied the game on a short run, then converted a run for two points and the win.

Ulysses 70, Kingman 24

ULYSSES — With three touchdowns in the first quarter, then three more in the second, the Ulysses Tigers didn't need much more to get past Kingman on Friday, 70-24.

The Tigers (4-3, 1-0) stayed on the ground for much of their work, gaining 388 yards rushing. Ulysses had 503 yards of total offense. Josh Jarnigan led the Tigers with 96 yards rushing and one touchdown. Josh Rodriguez had a pair of touchdown runs for Ulysses in the second quarter of 17 and 32 yards. Rodriguez carried the ball three times for 59 yards.

Kingman (0-7, 0-1) didn't score until the 3:30 mark of the fourth quarter and Uysses up 70-0.

Ulysses quarterback Bryce Moral passed with 85 yards and two touchdowns, and he ran for 32 yards and a touchdown.

Greeley County had a pass intercepted in the end zone and returned for a touchdown to thwart a potential tie at the end of regulation Friday in Minneola.

The Wildcats ran their district record to 3-0 as they took care of Greeley County 42-28 in eight-man play.

Jason McClaren scored four touchdowns and ran for 241 yards to pace the Wildcats (7-0, 3-0).

Greeley County (5-2, 2-1) had two touchdown passes and one TD run by Jonathan Miller.
