Despite having two starters and three varsity players home with illness, the Holcomb Longhorns boys won a key Great West Activities Conference game at Hugoton on Monday night, 59-51, thus securing the third seed in next week's Class 3A sub-state at Larned.
It will give them a homecourt game in the opening round on March 1.
The Longhorns (12-7) had a narrow 15-14 lead after one quarter and built it slowly to 31-25 at halftime.
Hugoton stayed close, though, with a 15-14 edge in the third, making it 45-40 going to the fourth quarter where Holcomb had a 14-11 scoring advantage.
For the Longhorns, Nolan Gaede scored 14 points, including 8-of-9 free throws, while Brendan Thomas and Kyle Walck added 12 and 11 points, respectively, to a balanced attack.
Hugoton (3-16) got strong scoring efforts from Cody Frederick with 23 and James Persinger with 16.
"I thought we played well and a couple of our younger players stepped up and did some good things," said Holcomb coach Scott Stegman. "Nolan (Gaede) continues to play very well for us and I was pleased with everyone's effort. We had very balanced scoring in the game."
Holcomb closes out its regular season schedule tonight by hosting Ulysses in a GWAC contest.
Boys tipoff is set for approximately 8 p.m. following the girls' 6:30 p.m. contest.
