Deerfield's option too much for Bulldogs

INGALLS — It had been the first quarter that had dealt the Ingalls Bulldogs early-season woes.

Friday night, though, the Bulldogs battled on near-even terms with an ever-improving Deerfield Spartan team before a second-quarter onslaught put the game out of reach as the Spartans finished with a convincing 70-28 Santa Fe Trail League victory.

The win improved Deerfield to 3-2, while the Bulldogs dropped to 1-3, having had their previous week's game cancelled due to a flu outbreak.

"No matter how much you try to simulate their speed in practice you just can't do it," said Ingalls coach Roger Thurlow, whose team had broken a 15-game losing streak two weeks ago with a 32-30 overtime win against Moscow.

But it wasn't to be on this Homecoming night for the 'Dogs. It was all Spartans once the second quarter got underway.

Holding on to a narrow, 20-14 lead after one period, the Spartans erupted for 28 second-quarter points.

And it came from all directions. Ivan Robles scored twice, one on a 28-yard scamper and the other on a 40-yard pass from Cristian Martinez. Martinez added a score on a seven-yard run and a 76-yard romp by Gustavo Anguiano, who got his first start of the season.

"We were fortunate in that we were able to utilize our two speed backs and our outside option worked well tonight," Deerfield coach Randy Richter said. "Early on this season, we had pre-determined reads but now we're just doing it more instinctively. The line is blocking better and we've got a lot of young kids who are getting better each week."

Anguiano had put both Deerfield touchdowns on the board in the first quarter — one on a 37-yard run and the other from four yards out. Ingalls had kept it close with a 33-yard Chance David touchdown and then the sophomore running back raced 31 yards for another TD. At that point, it was 14-14 before Robles put the Spartans on top for good with 1:41 remaining in the opening stanza when he scored on a 21-yard run.

"I thought we fought hard and played much better in the second half," Thurlow said. "The score was ugly, and we're still learning how to win. Deerfield's a very good team, well-coached and we just didn't have the speed to stop them on the outside."

The Spartans expanded their lead to 56-22 after three quarters before scoring twice more in the final period. Cristian Martinez and Anguiano got the final two scores on runs of five and seven yards, respectively. Ingalls' final score of the game came midway through the fourth quarter on a 34-yard pass from Landon Vanderree to Dalton Brooks.

"We've been preaching to the kids to just take one week at a time," Richter said of his team that lost virtually all of its starters from last year's unbeaten regular season team. "Things came naturally for those kids a year ago, but good things will happen if we continue to do the little things. We have improved and that's all a coach can ask."

Next week, Deerfield hosts Minneola while Ingalls is home against Rolla.
