At Plains, in a preview of what could be the Class 3A sub-state championship in another week, the Cimarron Lady Bluejays took the measure of No. 10-ranked Southwestern Heights, 43-39, with a fourth quarter rally on Thursday night in the regular-season finale for both teams.

The Hi-Plains League battle between the host Lady Mustangs and Lady Bluejays brought the No. 1 and 2-seeded teams for the upcoming Scott City sub-state. They are in opposite brackets and both entered the last regular season game with identical 17-2 records.

Cimarron trailed 25-23 heading into the fourth quarter before erupting for 20 points while limiting Heights to 14 points to rally for the four-point triumph.

The Lady Bluejays jumped out to a 12-10 first quarter lead as Lindsay Wehkamp and Morgan Ediger each knocked down a 3-pointer. In a pair of low-scoring quarters, the Lady Mustangs had slim margins of 8-7 and 7-4 in the second and third periods.

In the deciding fourth stanza, the Lady Bluejays got scoring from five different players — Ashtynn Burns with six of her game-high 13 points, Ediger with 5 and Wehkamp with 4. Taylor Siek also knocked down a 3-pointer.

Burns' 13 points were aided by cashing in 9-of-11 free throws as the Lady 'Jays finished 17-of-24 at the charity stripe. Ediger added 9 points and Wehkamp 8 for Cimarron, which is now 18-2. Heights got 10 points each from Rebi Jacobs and Sheree Ryan while Whitney Garinger added 9. Heights was just 11-of-22 from the line. The Lady Mustangs are 17-3.
