Sub-state basketball pairings released

Scott City’s boys will begin defense of their two straight state Class 3A basketball championships on Tuesday, when they host Lakin in the Southwestern Heights sub-state tournament.

The 19-1 Beavers claimed the 2011 and 2012 state titles in Hutchinson, and with four returning starters and six of their top seven players back, appear primed for a run to a potential three-peat. Their lone setback was a 67-63 overtime decision to Class 6A Wichita North (17-2) in the semifinals of the Dodge City Tournament of Champions the third week of January.

The Beavers will host Lakin (6-13) at 7 p.m. Tuesday, while Holcomb’s Longhorns (16-4) drew the No. 3 seed and will host Kingman at 7:30 p.m. on Monday. The Longhorns got an earlier day tipoff due to the fact that the Lady Longhorns (also 16-4) are the No. 2 seed and also host Kingman at 6 p.m. on Monday.

Cimarron’s girls, unbeaten at 19-0 and with one regular season game left, scheduled for today against Southwestern Heights, drew the No. 1 seed, and will host Scott City at 7 p.m. Monday. The Lady Bluejays, currently ranked No. 2 in the state, and Lady Longhorns met in last year’s sub-state championship, with Holcomb winning to earn its trip to Hutchinson.

Ingalls’ Lady Bulldogs, the No. 1-ranked team in Class 1A-Division II and last year’s third-place finisher, drew the top seed in its own sub-state. The Lady ’Dogs got a first-round bye and will not play until Feb. 28 against the Fowler-Greeley County winner at 7:30 p.m.
Moscow’s Lady Wildcats drew the No. 2 seed at Ingalls with a 16-4 record, also receiving an opening round bye. They will play at 6 p.m. on Feb. 28 against the winner of the Ashland-Rolla game on Monday.

In Class 2A at Elkhart, Meade’s boys and Elkhart’s girls earned the No. 1 seeds. Meade will face Syracuse (5-13), while the Lady Wildcats will take on the Lady Bulldogs (2-16). Boys quarterfinals will be played on Monday, with the girls to take center court on Tuesday at the home court of the higher seeded teams.

South Gray (16-4), moving up to 2A from Class 1A-Division I, will be the No. 2 seed and host Hodgeman County (8-12) at 7 p.m. Monday, while Stanton County (15-4) hosts Wichita County (9-11). Sublette’s Larks drew the No. 4 seed at 13-6 and will host Elkhart (10-9).

On the girls side of the bracket, Sublette (8-10) is the No. 3 seed, while Stanton County (7-12) is the No. 4 seed. The Lady Larks host Hodgeman County at 7 p.m. on Tuesday., while Stanton County hosts South Gray the same night. Meade’s girls (11-8), the No. 2 seed, host Wichita County (5-14).

In the Class 4A sub-state at Pratt, the Ulysses Tigers are seeded second with a 9-11 record, while Hugoton’s boys (3-15) are the eighth seed and will take on top-seeded Andale (17-2). Ulysses will host Nickerson (5-15) at 6 p.m. on Monday.

On the 4A girls side of the bracket, Hugoton (14-5) was seeded third and will host Goodland (4-16) at 7 p.m. while Ulysses (5-15) travels to Pratt (11-9) in a 6 p.m. game between the No. 5- and 4-seeded teams.

In Class 1A-Division I, Satanta and Deerfield teams will compete in the Coldwater-South Central sub-state.

The Lady Indians were seeded third with an 8-12 record, and will play Deerfield (1-18) at 6 p.m.on Monday in Coldwater. Deerfield’s boys drew the No. 3 seed at 7-12 and face Bucklin (2-16) at 6 p.m. on Tuesday. Satanta’s boys are the No. 5 seed at 4-15, and face Spearville (5-14) at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday. All games are at Coldwater.

Tournaments in all classes continue on Feb. 28 and March 1, with semifinals slated for girls one night and boys the other night. All championship games will be played on March 2.

Sub-state champions earn trips to their respective state tournaments on March 6 to 9. Class 4A is at the Salina Bicentennial Center, Class 3A at the Hutchinson Sports Arena, Class 1A-Division II at Gross Memorial Coliseum in Hays and Class 1A-Division I at Emporia’s White Auditorium.
