Lady Buffs get No. 1 seed

Garden City High School's girls volleyball team has drawn the No. 1 overall seed in the Class 6A Hutchinson sub-state tournament which will be played on Saturday.

The Lady Buffs, who are 24-11, will face No. 8 seed Wichita North (3-29) at 2 p.m. at the Hutchinson High School athletic complex.

On the other side of the four-team bracket will be Wichita Northwest (21-17) against Hutchinson (17-21).

The other four-team sub-state that will be contested in Hutchinson has No. 2 overall seed Dodge City (22-14) taking on Haysville-Campus (6-27) while Maize High (22-17) faces Wichita South (15-22). In each of the two brackets, the semifinal winners will face off for each championship and a berth in the Nov. 1 and 2 state tournament at the Kansas Expocentre in Topeka.

Other area schools also will be competing in respective sub-state tournaments throughout western and central Kansas.

In the newly-created Class 4A-Division I, the Lady Tigers of Ulysses (25-11) face Abilene (30-8), the host school, while McPherson (36-2) and Buhler (11-25) are in the other semifinal. In Class 4A-Division II at Colby, Scott City (6-26) will meet top-seeded Goodland (27-7) while Hugoton (19-17) faces host Colby (18-17) in the two semifinal matches. The winners of the Abilene and Colby sub-states will move on to their respective Division I and II state tournaments on Nov. 1 and 2 at the Salina Bicentennial Center.

Cimarron will serve as the host site for the area's Class 3A schools, with eight teams vying for the one berth to the Nov. 1 and 2 state tournament at White Auditorium in Emporia.

Hoisington has drawn the No. 1 seed and will face TMP-Marian of Hays. In the other half of the top bracket, it will be No. 5 Lakin (21-12) taking on Phillipsburg (28-8). In the bottom half of the bracket, it will be No. 2 seed and host Cimarron (28-7) meeting Norton (16-17) while Holcomb (27-7), the No. 3 overall seed, takes on Southwestern Heights (21-14). Two courts will be in use at Cimarron with semifinals and finals to follow the quarterfinal round.

Syracuse is hosting the Class 2A sub-state with area schools Stanton County, South Gray, Meade, Wichita County, Sublette and Elkhart competing.

The schedule with two courts in play, beginning at 2 p.m., will have Elkhart (19-16) taking on Syracuse (1-29), Stanton County (8-24) meeting South Gray (6-26) in the top half of the bracket while the bottom side bracket inclues Meade (15-18) against Wichita County (6-26) and Oakley (15-19) meeting Sublette (6-26). The Class 2A state will also be played in Emporia at White Auditorium.

In Class 1A-Division I, Satanta is playing host to four other schools. Top-seeded Spearville (26-2) has an opening round bye and faces the Deerfield (3-29) vs. Minneola (2-26) winner. In the other bracket, No. 2 Hodgeman County (18-16) has a bye as does No. 3 seeded Satanta (14-16). Those teams will face off in the second semifinal.

Moscow will be hosting one of two Class 1A-Division II sub-states along with Ransom-Western Plains.

At Moscow, Fowler is the top seed (18-15) and takes on the Rolla (11-17) versus Greeley County (0-31) winner in one semifinal. The other semifinal will have Moscow (15-13) against Ingalls (15-18), both recipients of first-round byes.

Dighton's Lady Hornets received the No. 1 seed in the Western Plains sub-state at Ransom and earned a first-round bye. They will face the winner of the Pawnee Heights (4-26) against Healy (3-23) winner. In the bottom bracket, Western Plains (16-16) and Otis-Bison (13-17) both have first-round byes and will meet in the second semifinal. Both Division I and II in Class 1A will have winners advancing to the state tournament on Nov. 1 and 2 at Gross Memorial Coliseum in Hays.
