Former South Gray High School and Garden City Community College standout Mikayla Skidmore will be recognized on Oct. 24 as a recipient of the Ottawa University Bill Frear Scholarship.

Skidmore, a 5-6 junior guard, transferred to Ottawa after playing a year for the Lady Broncbusters at GCCC where she was the starting point guard.

During her four-year career at South Gray, the Lady Rebels won two Class 1A state championships, finished second once, and she was honored as The Telegram's Player of the Year in 2010 and 2011.

The Lady Rebels were 79-2 during that three-year run of two state titles and a runner-up finish, and overall they were 91-12 during her four years.

Last year, becoming eligible for the second semester, Skidmore appeared in 15 games for the Ottawa Lady Braves, starting in seven of those. She averaged 10 points and 2.3 assists per game. She scored a career-high 20 points against McPherson College, and had a high of six assists against Southwestern and six steals against Sterling College. She is majoring in physical education.

The Frear Scholarship is awarded in honor of coach Bill Frear, the head coach at Ottawa from 1955 to 1978, who recorded 267 wins and won five KCAC championships. He also served as athletic director, head baseball, tennis and golf coach. The Frear Scholarship recipient receives $550.

Skidmore will be recognized during Ottawa University's Athletic Hall of Fame induction banquet at 6:30 p.m. in the Mowbray Student Union in Ottawa. Registration is required at www.ottawauniversityalumni.com or by calling (785) 248-2336.
