Scott City's Kite named to Shrine team
By The Telegram
Scott City High School's Drew Kite, who recently was named The Telegram's 2012 All-Area Football Player of the Year, has been selected to participate in the 2013 Kansas Shrine Bowl game. He will be on the West team's 33-player roster.
Kite, a 6-4, 215-pound tight end/linebacker, was one of the pivotal players in the Beavers' 14-0 season, which was capped off by a 28-21, come-from-behind victory over Silver Lake to claim the Class 3A state championship, the school's first in 21 years.
During his senior season, Kite caught 30 passes for 578 yards and 12 touchdowns. He was on the receiving end of the winning TD pass from Brett O'Neil with less than one minute remaining in the game against Silver Lake. In the championship game, he had four catches for 68 yards.
Defensively, Kite led a potent Beaver team by recording 137 tackles from his linebacker position, 53 of them solo. He also recorded seven sacks, had five interceptions and one fumble recovery.
Kite is the lone player from The Telegram area to be selected to the 2013 team.
The coach for the West team is Hays High's Ryan Cornelson. The 2013 game is scheduled for July 27 at Washburn University in Topeka.
Garden City High School's Brian Hill was the West's head coach for the 2012 game.
