One month after winning his second consecutive Class 6A state individual wrestling title, while also helping the Garden City Buffaloes to a repeat of a Class 6A state team championship, Michael Prieto garnered All-American honors on Sunday after placing third at the 25th Annual National High School Wrestling Championships.
The three-day event was held in Virginia Beach, Va., and Prieto, competing at 113 pounds, compiled a 6-1 record, with his only loss coming against eventual champion Josh McClure, the Missouri state champion who was 30-0 during his prep season. Prieto lost that match by a 2-0 decision.
Prieto’s wins came against an impressive array of wrestlers from different states, as the event attracted nearly 3,400 wrestlers from 47 states and two foreign countries.
He defeated Aslan Kilic of Georgia, 5-1, a fourth-place state finisher with a 38-3 record; Jacob Wynn, the 120-pound Virginia champion (34-2) by a 12-0 major decision; Tyler Raetz, the Vermont state champion (52-8) by a 5-2 decision; Tito Colom of New York, the fourth-place finisher there. He then lost the 2-0 decision to McClure.
Prieto then came back to post a 2-0 victory over John Arceri of New York and then in the third-place match, blanked Ozzy Lugo, the Florida State champ at 106 pounds (56-1) by a 7-0 decision. Lugo had pinned every opponent in his state competition.
There were 60 entrants in Prieto’s 113-pound sophomore division.
In mid-March, Prieto also competed at the Rocky Mountain Nationals in Denver where he posted a 9-2 record and finished third.
