Dighton girls, boys earn 1A-II state berths

Girls

Dighton 44, Natoma 35

The Dighton Lady Hornets used a 16-5 fourth quarter advantage to overcome Natoma and pull away for a 44-35 Class 1A-Division II sub-state championship win on Saturday in Palco.

Liz Heath led Dighton with 13 points, followed by Diamond Brown's 10. The Lady Hornets were tied with Natoma at halftime before trailing by two points at the end of the third quarter.

Regan Casey and Tatum Pfortmiller led Natoma with 13 and 10 points, respectively, as the Lady Tigers end their season with a 14-8 record.

Boys

Dighton 57, Palco 52

A 43-36 advantage by Dighton in the first three quarters in the game was just enough to allow the Hornets to hold off sub-state hosts Palco in the final minutes and claim the Class 1A Div. II sub-state championship with a 57-52 win on Saturday.

Isaac Alinor and Dirk Torson led Dighton with 15 points apiece as the Hornets made seven 3-point goals

Brent Gehring led Palco with 21 points to lead all scorers as the Roosters finish at 12-9.

Minneola 50, Deerfield 40

The Minneola Wildcats took advantage of Deerfield's struggles in the first and third quarters to pull ahead and knock off the Spartans in a 50-40 sub-state victory on Saturday in the Class 1A Div. I sub-state championship game at Coldwater.

Brandy Shumate and Matt McClaren led Minneola with 22 and 17 points, respectively, as the Wildcats had a 10-4 advantage in the first quarter and a 13-9 third quarter to get the upper hand.

Deerfield's Alex Mata led all players in the game with 25 points, including five 3-point goals. The Spartans end their season with a record of 9-13.

Minneola (50) — Harrington 0 2-4 2, Shumate 9 3-7 22, McClaren 6 5-12 17, Stewart 3 3-4 9, Britt 0 0-2 0. Totals 18 13-29 50.

3-point goals — Deerfield 7 (Al. Mata 5, Calderon 1, Rubio 1), Minneola 1 (Shumate).

Andale 65, Ulysses 28

The Andale Indians outscored Ulysses 55-21 in the final three quarters to run away with the Class 4A sub-state title with a 65-28 win over the Tigers on Saturday at Pratt.

Hunter Knoblauch led Andale with 20 points, followed by Gerad Deaver with 13 points and Bo Knoblauch with 10 as the Indians only led Ulysses 10-7 after the first period.

Tregg Rodriguez and Nathan Medina led Ulysses with nine points each as the Tigers end their season with a record of 11-12.
