Cimarron sweeps Elkhart in HPL action; Dighton girls win

At Elkhart, the Cimarron Bluejays' boys pulled away from a 1-point lead after three quarters to post a 64-56 victory on Thursday night over the Elkhart Wildcats in a Hi-Plains League encounter.

Leading 38-37 after three quarters, the Bluejays (4-2, 1-1) got nine points from Stewart Fairbank down the stretch. The 'Jays cashed in 11-of-18 free throws in the final period as well.

Elkhart (1-4, 0-2) had opened the game with an 18-14 lead at the end of the first quarter before Cimarron took a 28-25 advantage at the half.

Ted Boersma led a balanced Cimarron attack with 13 points, as four players scored in double figures. Fairbank and Alex Neuschafer added 11 apiece, Christian Fischer chipped in with 10, while Caleb Fischer and Josh Meis tallied eight each. For Elkhart, Alex Gomez hit for a game-high 19 points, including a trio of 3-pointers and was 6-of-6 at the free-throw line. Brendan Carter and Wes Higgins added 12 and 10 points, respectively, for the Wildcats.

Cimarron 64, Elkhart 46

Junior guard Ashtynn Burns scored 23 points to power the No. 4-ranked Class 3A Cimarron Lady Bluejays to a 64-46 victory over Elkhart on Thursday night in a battle of Hi-Plains League teams.

Burns' total included a pair of 3-point baskets and 9-of-12 free throws, as the Lady 'Jays remained unbeaten at 6-0 to close out their pre-holiday schedule.

The Lady Blujays also got double-figure scoring from 6-2 sophomore center Eva Koopman, who tossed in 14 points.

Cimarron (6-0, 2-0) had a slender 10-7 lead after one quarter and was up by six, 28-22, at halftime. Then, the Lady Bluejays broke the game open with a 23-6 outburst in the third quarter for a 51-28 advantage. Elkhart (3-2, 1-1) managed an 18-13 margin in the final eight minutes. Victoria Fullerton and Kacee Hoskinson topped the Lady Wildcats scoring with 14 and 10 points, respectively.

Dighton 40, LaCrosse 16

At LaCrosse on Tuesday, the Dighton Lady Hornets used a second-half surge to post an easy 40-16 victory over the Lady Leopards.

With the Hornets ahead just 12-8 at halftime, Dighton then went on a 14-2 spree in the third quarter to move ahead 26-10. They then put it away with a 14-6 fourth-quarter advantage.

Leslie Speer scored 21 points to pace Dighton's victory as she hit 9-of-17 field goals and 3-of-5 free throws. Alyssa Oborny led LaCrosse with six points.

The Lady Hornets improved their season record to 3-2.
