Ulysses, Stanton Co. post narrow wins; Scott City now 2-0

Ulysses 21, Great Bend 14
At Great Bend, Ulysses' Zach Romero scored the game-winning touchdown on a 5-yard run with 3:02 remaining to provide the Tigers with a 21-14 victory over the host Panthers.
Ulysses scored in the first quarter on a 1-yard run by Garrett Walters and it wasn't until the third quarter when Great Bend's Jonathan Allende raced 62 yards that the game was tied. The Tigers countered with a 33-yard run by Riley Seger to put them back up 14-7 at the end of the third.
Great Bend's Bryce Beck ran 23 yards early in the fourth quarter to knot the score again at 14 before Romero's game-winning score late.
The Tigers got 173 yards rushing from Ian Rudzik on 20 carries as they piled up 273 yards on the ground. Their defense limited the Panthers to 190 yards of offense (156 rushing, 34 passing). Ulysses and Great Bend are each now 1-1.

Stanton County 27, Wichita County 20
At Johnson, the host Trojans' Cole Smith blocked a punt in the fourth quarter and Jacob Cron recovered in the end zone for what proved to be the winning score, providing the margin in a 27-20 victory over Wichita County.
Adrian Gum rushed for 152 yards on 26 carries and scored three touchdowns for the Trojans (1-1) while the Indians fell to 1-1.
Gum scored on touchdown runs of 23, 15 and 3 yards. Wichita County got its scores on a 49-yard pass from Jantz Budde to Casey Day in the second quarter, a 10-yard run by Budde in the third period and a 25-yard run by Budde in the fourth quarter.
The Trojans were up 13-6 at halftime and 13-12 after three periods.
Colton Northrup had 14 carries for 101 yards for the Indians. Budde finished the game with seven completions in 18 attempts for 116 yards and one interception. The Trojans finished the game with 237 rushing yards and didn't turn the ball over.

Scott City 28, Colby 12
At Scott City, the defending Class 3A champion Beavers took an early 14-0 lead in the first quarter before the Colby Eagles came back with two scores in the second, trimming the halftime lead to 14-12.
But the Beavers scored twice in the third quarter and it was enough to provide them with a 28-12 Great West Activities Conference victory over the Eagles.
Paco Banda scored first for Scott City on a 12-yard run and then Trey O'Neil, whose status was uncertain before the game due to an injury, hit Chantz Yager fora 23-yard TD pass. Tim Bole was perfect on both PAT kicks.
Colby responded in the second period, getting TDs on a 53-yard pass from Josh Matchell to Adam Kiersch and then when Matchell recovered a fumble and returned it 30 yards. Both 2-point conversion passes failed.
Scott City, then scored the winning TD and extended the lead in the third, getting 2-yard run by O'Neil and Banda. Bole again was good on both extra point kicks.
The Beavers are 2-0 and will travel to Holcomb on Friday while Colby drops to 0-2.
