After watching his Garden City High School wrestling team go 4-0 in Friday's first day qualifying of the Randall, Texas, Duals, first-year coach Carlos Prieto had given his team a 'B' grade.

Following Saturday's semifinals and then finals, the Buffs' grapplers had move their grade up a notch.

That 'A' grade from their new coach came as the Buffs rolled to the team championship with 65-3 and 70-12 victories over Boys Ranch, Texas, and Dumas, Texas. That allowed them to head home with the team title and a 6-0 dual record.

"Saturday's performance was unreal," Prieto said. "They wrestled better and had more energy. The thing I was pleased with is that they were transitioning from one move to another and that really allows them to take advantage of the other wrestler."

Of the 14 wrestlers, 11 of them went unbeaten in Saturday's two matches. Chris Adler was the lone wrestler to drop a match against Boys Ranch, losing a 3-0 decision. Freshman Aaron Lozano was pinned at 285-pounds while Juan Carlos Rodriguez also was pinend at 182 in the finals against Dumas.

Michael Prieto (106), Efrain Sanchez (113), Matt Urrutia (120), Tevin Briscoe (132), AJ Hurtado (138), Trevor Kennedy (145), Adler (152), Zac Finch (160), Sam Reyes (195) and Samson Aldaco (220) all won by pinning their respective opponents.

"I really can't find a weakness to speak of," Prieto said of his team's performance. "They finished strong and that's what they are trying to do. Get better each time they get on the mat."

Prieto said the effort was a great way for the Buffs, preseason ranked No. 1 in Kansas Class 6A, to start the season.

"I don't know if we're that good, or the teams down there weren't very good," Prieto said.

Next up for the Buffs will be at 9 a.m. Saturday when they travel to the Clay Center Invitational.
