There was no apparent letdown for the Garden City Lady Buffaloes on Friday night at the New Garden when Guymon, Okla., arrived in town.

Coming on the heels of Tuesday's emotional intra-country victory over Holcomb, the Lady Buffs quickly jumped on top of the Lady Tigers and cruised to a 66-30 non-league triumph.

The victory improves the No. 7-ranked Class 6A Lady Buffs' record to 13-3, and they will have a week off before heading to Great Bend on Friday for a Western Athletic Conference test with the Lady Panthers as the second half of WAC play gets under way. The Lady Buffs currently lead the WAC with a spotless 4-0 mark.

Garden City scored the first 11 points and was never headed.

By the end of the opening eight minutes, the Lady Buffs had built their lead to 22-8 and by halftime was clearly in control, 41-13.

A swarming defense, which coach David Upton credited for his team's big win on Tuesday over Holcomb, was back at it on Friday as the Lady Buffs forced Guymon into 18 first-half turnovers.

"In the first half we did everything we should do against a team like Guymon," GCHS coach David Upton said. "We're still maturing, but I liked our start, I liked our activity and with that early lead, we called the press off and told them to work on our halfcourt defense, and we were still able to get turnovers and transition baskets."

Everybody got into the scoring act for Garden City as well, all nine players getting into the points column before the break.

"When we've got kids coming off the bench and contributing, it makes it tough on the defense," Upton said. "I like the fact that the girls are unselfish and are always looking for that extra pass."

The game slowed to a snails-pace in the second half, each team mustering just four points in the third quarter, making it 45-17 heading to the final period.

"We kind of laid an egg there in the third quarter, and against good teams we can't afford to do that," Upton said. "We needed to come out strong in the third. We did get it picked back up in the fourth and I was pleased with that."

The pace did quicken, though, over the last eight minutes, as the Lady Buffs went on a 16-2 spree at the outset and then cruised to the final buzzer.

Three Lady Buffs reached double-figure scoring, led by Jaymie Bernbeck's 14. Johna McClelland and Taryn Tempel contributed 12 each.

Garden City shot a respectable 44 percent from the field on 26-of-59 field goals while limiting the Lady Tigers to a chilly 27.5 percent on 8-of-29 attempts. Turnovers were a big problem for the visitors as they were guilty of 36 miscues while the Lady Buffs had 17, but just six of those coming in the first half.

Ashlyn Wadley led Guymon with nine points. The Lady Tigers slipped to 6-13 for the season.

Garden City returns to action against Great Bend on Friday.
