Lady Buffs pick up first victory

Published 4/3/2014

After two tough losses, one in overtime, the Garden City Lady Buffaloes soccer team finally broke through into the winning column, this time with a 1-0 shutout of Buhler on Thursday in the consolation bracket of the Goddard/Bishop Carroll Tournament.

The victory puts the Lady Buffs (1-2) into the consolation championship game at 11 a.m. Saturday, when they will take on the winner of Thursday's late game between Wichita North and Rose Hill. In the winner's bracket side, Goddard was facing Goddard Eisenhower while Bishop Carroll was opposed by Andover High.

Tiffany Butler scored the game's lone goal, getting a thru ball down the line, taking a one-touch and sending it past Buhler's goalkeeper in the 32nd minute. Evelyn Rodriguez provided the assist to Butler for the lone score.

From there, the Lady Buffs not only had to battle a tough Buhler squad, but also the cold and windy conditions that settled in across Kansas.

"It was a bad, bad day of weather to play, and the girls really hung in there," said GCHS coach Joaquin Padilla. "It was just tough and very physical. They took us out of our game."

Padilla said he was pleased with his team's defense.

"Oh yeah, they played well," Padilla said of the group that gave up just three shots to the Lady Crusaders. "We did a good job on that end."

It also helped to have sophomore goalkeeper Ashlee Richman return to the net after sitting out a game for receiving a red-card infraction in the season opener.

"If we keep winning by one, I'm good with that," Padilla said. "I thought we moved the ball and passed well. I thought we did a nice job of moving the ball down the line. They put a lot of pressure on our forwards, but we managed to keep them away from the goal."

While the Lady Crusaders were limited to just three shots, the Lady Buffs were able to send 10 shots against Buhler goalkeeper Ashley Main, three of which were saves.

"We hit the post on one shot, came close on a couple of others, but couldn't get them in," Padilla said.
