GCHS bowlers sweep WAC dual with Demons

DODGE CITY — Tuesday's Western Athletic Conference dual with Dodge City at Spare Thyme Bowl was just the perfect tonic for the Garden City Buffaloes bowling teams.
The boys, behind freshman Tristan Funk's spectacular 717 series, finished the day with a 9-2 match record against the Red Demons, while the Lady Buffs, although not firing on all cylinders, were good enough to blank the Lady Demons 11-0. Holcomb also participated in the match and finished third on the boys side and girls were second.
The solid performance by the Buffs, though, was highlighted by Funk's season-high 700-plus series in which he rolled games of 228-254-235.
"It was a very good day for us, very good," GCHS coach Kip Nichols said. "Tristan finally showed me what he's capable of by rolling consistently across the board. Today, he got it done."
Theron Kells was the next top bowler for Nichols with a 630 series, highlighted by games of 223 and 215.
On the girls side of things, Emma Stoecklein was the lone bowler to reach 500 as she had games of 206-137-157. The rest of the Lady Buffs struggled throughout, although it was good enough to topple the Lady Demons.
"We did a better job in the Baker format today," Nichols said of the girls. "I thought they battled well, just didn't find the lines today."
Nichols said he hoped the performance by the boys was an omen of things to come when they head back to Dodge on Thursday for the WAC tournament.
