Prep sub-states: Hugoton, Cimarron girls advance to semis

Girls

Hugoton 62, Goodland 31

At Hugoton, the Lady Eagles outscored Goodland 51-19 in the last three quarters of the game to fly away with a 62-31 win against Goodland in the first round of Class 4A sub-state action on Tuesday.

Nicole Kinser led Hugoton with 28 points to lead all players in the game, followed by Riley Sosa with 12 points. All of Sosa's points came from four 3-point goals.

Brianna White led Goodland with 11 points as the Lady Cowgirls end their season with a record of 4-17.

Hugoton (15-5) will move to the 4A sub-state semifinals and will face Colby on Friday at Pratt. Game time is currently scheduled for 6 p.m.

Cimarron 70, Scott City 52

At Cimarron, the Lady Bluejays used a 22-8 second quarter to help shake off Scott City down the stretch for a 70-52 win in the first round of Class 3A sub-state play on Tuesday.

Ashtynn Burns and Morgan Ediger led Cimarron with 21 points each, followed by Eva Koopman with 18 points as the Bluejays trailed Scott City 14-10 after the first quarter.

That 32-22 halftime lead was expanded to 50-37 after three quarters before closing out the game with a 20-15 run in the fourth quarter. Cimarron improved to 21-0 while Scott City ends its season at 3-18.

Shanaya Hoeme led Scott City with 18 points, followed by Janessa Lowenthal with 16 points and Bailey Nickel with 10 The Lady Beavers end their season at 3-18.

Cimarron will face either Cheney or Lakin on Thursday in the sub-state semifinals at SW Heights.

Boys

SW Heights 64, Cimarron 61 (OT)

After defeating Cimarron on Saturday, the visiting Southwestern Heights Mustangs needed overtime to drop the Bluejays again to advance in the Class 3A sub-state with a 64-61 decision on Tuesday at Cimarron.

Clayton Chase led Heights with 22 points. Nate and Ben Johnsrud also had double figures for the Mustangs with 13 and 11 points, respectively. The tight game was tied 56-56 at the end of regulation.

Stewart Fairbank led Cimarron with 27 points, with Christian Fischer adding 13. The Bluejays end their season with a record of 13-8.

Heights (12-8) will be back at home as sub-state hosts on Friday when they go against Scott City in a sub-state semifinal contest.

Moscow 58, Greeley County 32

The Moscow Wildcats had four players in double figures as they pulled away from Greeley County in the second half for a 58-32 win to open up Class 1A-Division II sub-state play on Tuesday.

Rigo Bustillos led Moscow with 16 points as Easton Bohl and Mathew Pearson each added 13. Alexis Manriquez also chipped in 10 points for the Wildcats as they outscored Greeley County 32-12 in the second half.

AJ Govert led Greeley County with 15 points as the Jackrabbits end their season at 10-11.

Moscow will face top-seeded Fowler on Friday in the sub-state semifinals, also at Ingalls.

Ashland 62, Ingalls 48

The Ingalls Bulldogs, despite hosting the sub-state tournament, fell short in the second half against higher-seeded Ashland with the Bluejays pulling out a 62-48 win on Tuesday in a Class 1A-Division II first-round game.

Grant Meininger led Ashland with 30 points. Kole Konrade also added 14 points for the Bluejays.

Chad Myers paced Ingalls with 19 points as the Bulldogs end their season at 3-18.

Ashland will face No. 2 seeded Rolla in a sub-state semifinal game on Friday, also at Ingalls.
