Prep boys: Lakin, Moscow, So. Gray, Hugoton post wins

South Gray 63, Satanta 58

At Satanta, the Rebels of South Gray got 16 points from Tate Skinner, while Carson Skidmore added 15 and Jake Peters 12 to propel a 63-58 victory over the host Indians on Friday night in the season opener for both teams.

Skinner got 10 of his points in the first half as the Rebels opened a 22-13 lead after one quarter and led 40-24 at halftime. Satanta still trailed 54-35 after three quarters but put on a fourth-quarter surge to pull within the five-point final margin.

The Indians got 17 points from James Turpin and 14 from Tristan Colantonio.

Hugoton 51, Syracuse 36

At Syracuse, the visiting Eagles got 15 points from Parker Titus and 12 from Jeison Rodriguez to propel Hugoton to a 51-36 non-league victory over the host Bulldogs on Friday night.

Syracuse led 8-5 after one quarter, but a 19-11 Hugoton surge in the second, provided the Eagles with a 24-19 halftime lead. They extended it out with a third quarter 11-6 margin and then outscored the 'Dogs 16-11 in the closing eight minutes.

Tierney DeWitt had eight points to lead the Bulldogs.

Moscow 41, Ingalls 36

At Moscow, the Wildcats provided coach Will Brown with his first victory at the school's helm. It also spoiled the Ingalls coaching debut of Curtis Myers.

Matt Pearson provided the offensive punch for the Wildcats, scoring 15 points while Brice Valdez added 10. Zach Batman was high for the visiting Bulldogs with nine points.

Ingalls led 8-6 after one quarter, trailed 17-14 at halftime and then Moscow led 32-23 after three periods.

Meade 67, Elkhart 55

At Elkhart, the visiting Buffaloes got a 35-point explosion from Morgan Davis to lift last year's Class 2A state runner-up squad to a season-opening win over the host Wildcats.

Davis finished with four 3-pointers, and was 5-of-5 at the free throw line. Twenty-four of those points came in the final half. Jett Little added 11 for the Buffs. Meade led 20-12, 30-24 and 53-35 at the quarter stops. For Elkhart, Izzy Barco and Alex Garcia led the way with 23 and 21 points, respectively.

Lakin 60, SW Heights 55

At Lakin, the Broncs got a 23-point performance from sophomore Ryder Yakel en route to their season-opening win over the visiting Heights Mustangs.

It provided new head coach Nate Schmitt with his first win at LHS. The Broncs were down by 11, 33-22, at halftime, but came out red-hot in the final half with a 38-22 advantage.

Yakel scored 16 of his points in the second half, including four 3-pointers. Ian Shelden added 10 for the winners. Heights got 13 points from Nate Johnsrud and 12 points from Jorge LeLaTorre.

At Tribune, the visiting Trojans got 20 points from C. Smith en route to a convincing road win over the Jackrabbits.

The Trojans led 15-4 after one quarter, and were in front comfortably 33-5 at halftime. T. Wilcox had nine for Greeley County.

Deerfield 64, Hodgeman Co., 50

At Jetmore, the Hodgeman Co., Longhorns couldn't outlast the visiting Deerfield Spartans as they would lose their season opener, 64-50. The highest scorer for the Longhorns was Kolt Washburn with 17 points. He was joined by teammate Brennan Harms, who also scored double-digit points with 12. As for the Spartans they had the top performer of the night in Mike Mata, who scored 19 points. Three other Spartans also scored 14 points apiece in Alf Melendez, Anthony Mata, and Alex Mata.
