8-man: Rebels edge Deerfield in shootout; Ingalls makes comeback

South Gray 56, Deerfield 54

At Montezuma, the Rebels intercepted a pass to stop a final Deerfield drive and held off the Spartans 56-54 in district play.

After a wild first quarter that finished 22-22, South Gray outscored Deerfield 22-20 in the second, the difference being a safety, one of three by the Rebels on the night.

Deerfield pulled to within two points when Mike Mata hit Rene Rubio or a 5-yard scoring strike, but the Rebel defense stopped the 2-point conversion run before the final interception to seal the win.

Heny Friesen and Ryan Griebel both scored three touchdowns for South Gray.

Rene Rubio scored five times for Deerfield, including four rushing touchdowns. Mike Mata threw for three scores and ran for another.

Spearville 58, Satanta 8

At Spearville, the Lancers made quick work of visiting Satanta, 58-8, in a district game called after three quarters.

Spearville scored twice in the first quarter on short runs, then went up 36-8 at halftime. Nathan Stein scored his third and fourth touchdowns in the third quarter in leading the Lancers (6-1) to the win.

Satanta (2-5) got its only score in the second quarter when Kyle Abernathey threw a 40-yard pass to Jesus Garcia.

Ingalls 14, Rolla 6

At Ingalls, two fourth-quarter touchdowns were all the points Ingalls needed to slip past Rolla for a 14-6 district win on Friday to keep their postseason hopes alive.

Branson Sandoval led Ingalls (5-2, 2-1) on the ground with 173 rushing yards, and had the Bulldogs' game-winning 7-yard touchdown run late in the fourth quarter. Zeke Cox had the other touchdown for Ingalls.

Jordan Schwindt had Rolla's lone score with a 5-yard rushing touchdown in the first quarter as the Pirate's playoff hopes are now in jeopardy at 5-2 and 1-2 in 8-man district II-8.

Ingalls hosts Ashland next week, while Rolla hosts Bucklin.

At Dighton, the Hornets put up a fight but failed to score in a tough 20-0 loss to Victoria in District 7 play.

Victoria scored once in the first quarter and twice in the second to account for all the scoring.

Dighton (4-3, 2-1 in district play) will be at Sylvan-Lucas next.
